A square is 100 sq ft of roof surface — bigger than the floor plan because of pitch and overhangs.

Anthony Mitchell has run Tar Star Roofing out of Haverhill for what the company itself puts at about 20 years, working roofs from Newburyport down through Boston. The trade people call him for is squarely roofing — slate, shingle, and flat systems, plus the chimney flashing work that keeps coming up in reviews. Nineteen reviews since 2023 across Google, Angi, and HomeAdvisor tell mostly one story: Anthony calls back fast, shows up the next day — sometimes the same day, even on a Saturday — and gives a price before starting. A homeowner with a slate leak in 2026 said he priced the job to fit her budget and started work at 7:30 the next morning; another, dealing with a leaking porch roof mid-storm, had him out that same day and finished within 24 hours. A 2024 Google review singled out a chimney flashing repair as fair-priced, well-done work. Angi and HomeAdvisor both put him at 4.9 out of 5 across 73 ratings; Google shows 4.5 from 16. His Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active, verified against the state registry, and the BBB — where he isn't accredited — grades him A+. Before calling, a few things are worth asking about. One 2025 review reported the owner asking for cash on the spot without providing an invoice — worth clarifying up front how you'll be billed and whether you'll get paperwork. A separate 2025 review described a crew member starting roof work before the customer had actually authorized it, sorted out once the office was called, but worth a clear scope-and-start conversation before the truck shows up. And a 2025 Google review, unrelated to any roofing job, described the owner driving through a stop sign near a daycare in his truck — not a comment on the work itself, but the kind of thing that's fair to know about. None of that has dented the overall pattern: this is a roofer whose customers keep describing the same thing — quick to answer, straightforward about cost, and willing to take on a slate or flat roof most companies would rather not touch. He's a reasonable call for a roof repair or full reroof in the Merrimack Valley, especially on older roofing material; just settle the payment and start-date details in writing before work begins.
I had a bad leak in my slate roof. The Tar Star owner Anthony called and came the next day. Saw what was needed, understood my money concerns gave me a price I could live with and started work at 7;30 the next day which was a Saturday. I could not be happier with.the quality of work and would recommend Tar Star Roofing any time.
We had a leaking skylight. Anthony returned my call right away, gave me a quote based on photos, and came over the next day to do repairs. He is clearly knowledgeable and responsive. Great work.
We highly recommend Anthony and Tar Star Roofing. Our roof project was challenging due to constant weather delays, but Tony stayed in close communication every step of the way, calling regularly with updates and showed up ready to work when the weather allowed. Anthony handled a difficult roofing job with professionalism, honesty. He made all the right adjustments along the way and even helped us with another little project we were working on. Tony clearly takes pride in doing the job correctly. It's hard to find contractors who are this reliable and genuinely care about their customers. We are extremely happy with the finished work and would absolutely recommend Tony to anyone looking for a trustworthy, hardworking roofer. Thank you, Tony!
Our roof was over 20 years old. It not only needed some repairs, but needed to be redone for the long haul. Anthony was responsive, seemed to correctly diagnose the problems we had on the roof, and proposed solutions that matched our budget and desired duration of a fix. He was very competitively priced compared to other bids. His worker was clean and courteous. They fixed the holes, put on a silicone sealant, and sealed gaps near some exhaust vents.
