Townsend Energy is the New Hampshire arm of a long-established New England fuel and home-comfort company, operating from 658 Daniel Webster Highway in Merrimack. By its own account the business was founded in 1931 by Mial E. Townsend, who started out delivering kerosene and heating oil from his home in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, and it describes itself as family-owned and operated ever since, with more than 95 years serving Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.
What it sells is breadth. The company's own site lists heating oil, propane and diesel delivery alongside HVAC installation and repair — boilers, furnaces, heat pumps, ductless and ceiling-cassette systems — plus plumbing, water heaters and electrical work including panels, rewiring and generators, all bundled under a Townsend360 membership, with stated 24/7/365 availability across a service list that runs to well over a hundred towns in three states.
The customer record is mixed, and it splits along a clear line: the installation work draws praise, the account and contract side draws the complaints. On r/newhampshire in 2023 a homeowner said they had good luck with Townsend Energy, singled out the absence of a hard sell when they were in a bind, mentioned free financing at the time, and said the installer, Matt, did top-shelf work. A March 2026 Google reviewer who switched over from Amerigas said a staff member went out of her way to lock in cheaper pricing, and a 2024 reviewer described easy phone dealings and new-customer discounts.
Against that, a 2022 one-star reviewer described the acquisition of Petro Home Services' New Hampshire oil business, said Petro terminated customers' contracts without notice, and held Townsend partly responsible for failing to help with the transition. A Reddit poster in July 2026 said they had used Townsend for years and had just been told their contract fee would double, and a December 2024 poster in another thread noted their long-time supplier, Amanda's Oil, had been absorbed by Townsend. Google's own average sits at 3.0 stars across 47 ratings — well below what the three retrievable review bodies alone would suggest, so a large share of raters left no written account.
This is a reasonable call for a southern New Hampshire homeowner who wants automatic fuel delivery and one company for the heating, plumbing and electrical work behind it, and the installation reviews support that. Before signing, get the contract fee, its renewal terms and any price-cap or pre-buy program in writing, and ask what happens to your terms if your account is transferred.
