Ultimate Construction Co is Stephen Zindle's one-man remodeling outfit at 135 Howe Street in Marlborough, hired mostly for finished basements, room additions and kitchen and bath remodels across Middlesex and Worcester counties. For most of its published history the reviews were unusually good, and unusually specific about why. Writing in July 2010, a homeowner described Zindle arriving with his plumber, electrician and plasterer to scope a basement, then producing a contract with a payment schedule "thereby insuring that there would be no surprises upon completion" — and finishing on time with the town inspectors commenting on the quality. A September 2011 reviewer called it "first class quality, exactly on budget and in line with original quote (which was very detailed, unlike other contractors)." In January 2014 another homeowner credited him with redesigning a basement layout to get a better bathroom and laundry, and with working late into a weekend so a son's party could go ahead. That run of seven Angi reviews, from July 2010 to November 2017, averages 4.9. The most recent account is very different, and a homeowner should read it before calling. In a review dated 5 August 2024, a client wrote that the floor levelling and balcony work was "great," but that communication was "always difficult," and that a contracted in-wall cabinet was never built: plans were drafted, a month-or-so estimate given, "and then nothing. Ghosted. He left a hole in the wall for us to find someone else to deal with," after four months without any reply to texts, calls or emails. That reviewer noted no deposit had been taken, so no money was lost. Two other things to settle up front. Whether the business is still actively taking work is genuinely unclear: the Angi profile is now filed under Zindle's personal name and geolocated to Boca Raton, Florida rather than Marlborough, and no review anywhere postdates 2024. And the stated tenure does not agree with itself — the Houzz About says he has worked the Greater Boston area since 1990, while Angi's business highlights claim 28 years. Credentials are claimed but not numbered: Houzz lists an unrestricted Construction Supervisor License, an HIC License and Lead Safe Certified Firm status, with no registration numbers published, and our check of the Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor registry found no registration under this company name in Marlborough. Ask for both numbers in writing and verify them, confirm in the contract exactly what completion looks like and by when, and get a written commitment on how progress will be communicated.

I would give 2.5 stars, equally down the middle, if it was possible. We hired Stephen and his team to level a floor, install a balcony, and then to build out an in-wall cabinet. Communication with Stephen was always difficult. He was hard to get a hold of, schedule and even understand next steps. However, the work that was done by him and his team was great on the floor and balcony. As a homeowner it's nice to know things we are responsible for, like staining the balcony, after it's been installed. Communication was never great, but the work was good on the floor and balcony. The in-wall cabinet never happened. He drafted plans, provided an estimate of a month or so to come back out and complete the job. And then nothing. Ghosted. He left a hole in the wall for us to find someone else to deal with. It's been 4 months without any communication from him so we've finally given up waiting. Thankfully Stephen doesn't require any deposit down for projects so we didn't lose money, but having a hole in the wall is less than ideal. We do hope he's okay, because not even a reply to texts, calls and emails to say "I'm not doing the job" has left us worrying something has happened. However, we need to move on with dealing with the hole in the wall. Our 2.5 stars is because it's a struggle in the communication department, but the work is good when he does it. Be prepared for him finishing only what he wants to and a struggle for you to know what's happening, what you may need to do as a homeowner and when he's coming to the house. However, the work itself, when done, is very good.
Stephen was very responsive and was very good to work with. Our basement came out awesome. We had some hiccups on schedule, but we worked it through. Typically wasn't his mistakes but his subcontractors or suppliers that delayed some work. Overall, we are very happy with him and his guys. He kept me informed for the most part. His price was competitive and changes in scope were handled well and fairly.
Stephen is a great contractor! His quality of work is outstanding and the contractors that he works with are equally outstanding. I would highly recommend him for any project you have!
Yes, I recommend this pro
Stephen was very professional, and so were his helpers and contractors. He provided a detailed estimate of the work including framing, insulation, plaster, electrical, plumbing, heating and AC, flooring, doors and windows, trim, and painting, which was helpful for us to have a better idea of the overall budget needed. The estimate included allowances for items such as flooring, plumbing and lighting, and actual payments were adjusted based on the actual costs of these items. We did chose to buy some items through Stephen as he was kind enough to pass on his contractor discounts to us. He was also very helpful in the design of the basement plan and proposed a layout that was better than our original plan, which enabled to get a great functionality of the bathroom and the laundry room, while minimizing the space taken from the play area. He came up with nice arrangements to hide the heating duct and the foundation wall (creating a seating bench and a shelf). When we told him that our son planned a party with his friends in the basement, he worked late hours during the week and during the week-end prior to the party to make sure the basement could accommodate the party on time. He also helped us in the set up of the media room and the house network, and made sure the different video game platforms are running properly, which earned high points with the kids :) The basement is now looking great, and became everyone's favorite place in the house. Overall, we found Stephen very conscientious about his work, reliable, honest, attentive to our questions and requests, and pleasant to interact with. We kept a continuous communication with him throughout the course of the work, and we really liked how he kept us informed about the work progress all along. During and after this work, we had several remodeling and repairs in other parts of the house, which he did for us in a timely manner. We will be definitely calling him again for future house needs. An overall excellent experience. Thank you Stephen!
