W McKay Construction LLC is a two-generation carpentry outfit — William McKay and William McKay III — working the Merrimack Valley and North Shore. Houzz files it under woodworkers and carpenters and lists a 26-town service area from North Andover; BuildZoom lists the business at 4 Powder Mill in Rowley. The company's own pitch is high-end finish work with in-house design, plus vendor management on larger jobs. The permit trail is the most solid thing here: eight permitted projects in Littleton, North Andover, Byfield, Newbury, Melrose and Newburyport, most in the $34,000 to $55,000 range — kitchens, an attic conversion, a tenant apartment rebuilt frame to finish, a deck and entry rework. That is real, checkable work in the trade they claim. What's thin is what homeowners have said. Three reviews total, both sources combined, and none of them recent; the Houzz profile has never collected one. That is not enough to put a number on how they perform today. The licence picture needs a direct question. BuildZoom shows a Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, number 179265, that it could not verify — last seen expiring in July 2018, with a second record listing the same number as cancelled. Houzz separately shows a different number, CS-089332, and self-claimed HIC, CSL and OSHA 10 credentials that nobody has checked. Both sites list million-dollar liability and workers' comp policies on the company's own word. Worth a call if you want a finish carpenter with a permitted remodeling history in this corner of Essex County. Before signing anything, ask for the current HIC registration and construction supervisor licence numbers, look them up yourself at the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs, and get certificates of insurance sent by the insurer.

Verified Hire, exteriors project. Overall quality of work, responsiveness, and project consultation was excellent. Bill and his people were very responsive, available, and helpful with questions and suggestions. Only area with room for improvement was cleanliness of the work site. Too often found cigarette butts, water bottles, and coffee cups in various places around the work area as well as wood scraps and saw dust strewn about. A big pet peeve for me! However, I wouldn't hesitate to refer them or use them again based on my overall experience.

Bathroom Remodel, $17,000, 28 days. I've had Bill do multiple projects for me, most recently a total master bathroom reconstruction (moved all the plumbing). He gave me a fair quote inclusive of some things I did not consider. Bill, with his many years of experience, gave us some great ideas, most of them we used, and the finished work looks great. You can tell with any of his work that he excels at the finish work...anyone can bang in a 2x4, but not may can get corner molding to fit perfectly.... Fair price, quality work, clean, responsive "he'll call you back", done on time. Would and have recommended him to others.
