W. Vernon Whiteley Plumbing & Heating works out of 28 Village Landing in West Chatham and covers Cape Cod, doing plumbing, heating and air conditioning for homes and commercial buildings. The company says it has been trading since 1952, is now run by the third generation — siblings Eric and Sara Whiteley — and fields a team of about 75 tradespeople. Its Massachusetts plumbing licence is registry-verified and active, held under the company's own name. Customers who are on the books speak well of the response. A homeowner of almost twenty years wrote in February 2025 about exemplary service on an urgent issue; a 2023 reviewer said a technician arrived within hours to fix a failing heating system ahead of record cold; a small business in 2024 had a scheduler on the phone, a technician on site within an hour and the work finished by noon. Another 2024 customer credited the installer with walking them through the remote for a new mini split. The complaints are consistent with each other and worth reading. A December 2025 reviewer who lost heat on a Saturday before Christmas said the company quoted $460 just to come out and then declined the call because they were not an existing customer, despite 24x7 emergency service being advertised on the site and trucks. A 2022 reviewer described the same outcome as a twenty-year seasonal customer, saying service was refused under a policy about not having called in four years. A separate 2022 reviewer wrote a long account of trying and failing to get service. There is also an old regulatory record: in a 1998 Cape Cod Times report, the state Department of Environmental Protection fined the firm $4,700 for improperly removing asbestos from basement pipes in a Centerville home without notifying the state. Best suited to Cape Cod homeowners who want an established, licensed shop for planned plumbing, heating and HVAC work and are willing to become a regular account. If you are a seasonal owner or calling for the first time in an emergency, ask up front what the trip charge is and whether they will take the call at all.
“Whiteley out of chatham”
“The state Department of Environmental Protection found that W. Vernon Whitley Inc., a plumbing and heating firm, removed the asbestos improperl without notifying the state beforehand.”
“After losing heat on a cold Saturday evening a few days before Christmas, I called Whiteley to see if they would come. They advertise 24x7 emergency repair service on their website and trucks. First thing I was told; “It will be $460 just to come to the house”.”
“Sara and Eric Whiteley are the brother and sister team behind the third generation of W. Vernon Whiteley, Inc. in Chatham.”
“Thanks to CDP board member Aaron Polhemus and our friends at A&A Building and Remodeling, Bayside Electric, W. Vernon Whiteley Plumbing & Heating, MT Drywall, and Mary-Ann Agresti of the Design Initiative, we were able to transform the former home of New Farm into modern offices.”
After losing heat on a cold Saturday evening a few days before Christmas, I called Whiteley to see if they would come. They advertise 24x7 emergency repair service on their website and trucks. First thing I was told; “It will be $460 just to come to the house”. The second question was, “Are you an existing customer?”, I said “no”. “Well, we won’t be able to come then.” I asked if I could become one simultaneous to the service call and was told no, but I could call back during the week and talk to the office about that and arrange a service call. Ok…and freeze until then? So an update of all your materials with the caveat that 24x7 is only available if you’re a current customer is in order. In sharp contrast, I called another local plumber and their first comment was, “I want you to have heat, I’ll be there in an hour or so”. He also told me the rate would be time and a half, which I expected as it was an emergency, weekend call. But that rate was still almost $200 less than the $460 fee just to show up Whiteley quoted. To me that’s just opportunistic greed. Period. And I would’ve relented to pay it if they had come because having heat was more important. But their priorities aren’t customer service or helping people in their community in need on a cold night in December - their priority is their business and money. That’s a company culture and management decision, so not commenting on any of the technicians or quality of work. In the end I’m going to have to install a new system, probably a $10-12k investment plus service. So they lost more than a new customer. There was nothing “unparalleled” about my experience with Whiteley and I’d say call someone else.
We have been clients of Whiteley since our house was built almost 20 years ago. They have always provided exemplary customer service with highly knowledgeable and skilled professionals. We recently had an urgent issue and their response time was prompt and they did everything to get our heat back up and running. Each and every employee from the first call to each person who comes to our home truly cares about us as a customer. We are forever grateful and would rely only on Whiteley! Thank you!
Always so fast, so pleasant and so helpful. Our go-to Cape plumber. Kevin is great.
Terrific office workers and efficient and friendly installers. Brian trained us in how to use the remote for a new mini split and was clear and helpful. They go above and beyond!
Our small business called Whitely with several plumbing issues, the scheduler was reassuring and helpful, a technician was on-site within an hour and everything was fixed by noon. The technician was friendly, courteous and very professional, navigating our old building and hectic work environment with ease and diplomacy. Five stars, wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.
