York Building & Remodeling has two very different reputations depending on where you look: five customers on Houzz gave it a perfect five stars, while its Google page sits at 2.3 stars from three ratings. The Sandwich, Massachusetts company says on its Houzz profile that it was established in 2008 and is owned and operated by Matthew York. Massachusetts' contractor registry lists its Home Improvement Contractor licence, number 162640, as active, with Matthew York as the holder of record. Building permit records cover 40 permitted projects, and the company shows 14 project portfolios covering custom homes, additions, kitchen and bath remodels, basements and home restoration. A 2022 Cape Cod LIFE feature on a Dennis property reported that the Sandwich firm signed on to that project in the fall of 2019, working alongside A3 Architects. The praise from people who hired them is specific, and it is dated. A homeowner writing in December 2018 said the house was delivered on time and on budget, with real-time feedback on selections along the way. Another, in January 2019, said he works in the building industry and is on job sites daily, so his standards for building his own home were high, and Matt York was the builder who met them. A reviewer that same month called the team extremely responsive and communicative and willing to talk through changes as projects moved. A homeowner in October 2019 described being supported and attended to from the first meeting through an entire renovation, and in August 2020 one wrote that she interviewed five contractors before choosing Matt York. All of those favorable accounts predate 2021. What is recent is less flattering, and it is about conduct on site rather than finished work. In July 2026 two people living near one of the company's jobsites left one-star Google reviews. One described a residential demolition underway with no measures in place to keep insulation and dust debris from blowing onto neighboring properties. The other wrote that safety and environmental precautions were skipped on a project near their house and told readers to beware. Anyone hiring for demolition or a large tear-out should ask directly what dust containment, site protection and neighbor notification the company puts in place. Two smaller things are worth confirming. BuildZoom lists an active Massachusetts Construction Supervisor licence, number CS-097162, for the business, but that is a directory's listing rather than something checked against the state registry, so ask to see the card. The company's own website is currently a placeholder while it is being updated, which makes its Houzz project pages the practical place to look at finished work. For a Cape Cod homeowner planning a custom build, a large addition or a full kitchen renovation, this is a licensed builder with a substantial permit history and detailed customer accounts behind it, with the caveat that those accounts are now five or more years old. Ask for references from the past year or two, confirm the construction supervisor licence, and settle dust and debris control in writing before any demolition begins.
“Alison Alessi, co-principal of A3 Architects in Dennis, met the homeowners in 2018, with Sandwich’s YORK Building & Remodeling signing on in the fall of 2019.”
They chose to avoid safety/environmental precautions on project located near my house. Presumably to save a few dollars since it would not have been a difficult task at all but would have added an additional expense for them. Beware
They are currently starting the demo of a residence and have absolutely no mitigation measures in place or practice to prevent the insulation and other dust debris contained within the actual construction site. The workers on site were asked if they were going to do any preventative measures to keep the dust/debris from blowing into ours and other neighboring properties, and he said we’ve already done everything we are required to do. Another worked yelled to him and said she wants you to stop, and he waved his arm in dismissal of her request. Then as they ripped thru the structure the dust developing and being blown towards our house could be smelled and therefore they did not keep all required debris on the actual construction site. I have called the office number and left a message for the owner to contact me before more of this demo takes place as the first dump truck of debris has been hauled off site and they are waiting for him to return to continue. This project started about 8a and here it’s now 10:30a with nobody from York calling back to address these potential health concerns In failing to keep all debris from leaving the construction site. I’ll post updates as things progress as to how York Construction handles this. Called and spoke with receptionist at 10:45ish and asked if the owner was in yet. She said he’s offsite and she is making calls to see what needs to be done. I said STOP THE DEMO until you have a water truck on site to spray the project down to prevent the debris dust from continuing to contaminate the neighboring properties. She said she doesn’t k ow about that stuff and call are being made to figure things out. Well the owner who holds a contractors license should no the requirements of keeping ALL DEBRIS from leaving the sign site. To have to water the demo site and structure down as the perform their work would cost more because of the added weight of the wet debris being hauled to the dump and the cost to have a water truck performing this task. Save money and don’t have any concern for the neighboring houses being affected. Again… shame on York Building and Remodeling for not caring enough to do their work without risk to others properties or health.
Nice
York Building and Remodeling does not disappoint! Matt and his team are professional and always answer your call, text or email in a timely manner. I interviewed 5 contractors prior to choosing Matt York. His knowledge and attention to detail made my decision to utilize York Builders very easy. Matt and his team helped me build the home I always envisioned. Our family recommends Matt York without hesitation.
The uttermost in professionalism and workmanship!! From our first meeting with Matt and throughout the entire renovation, Matt was supportive and attentive. Living through a renovation is no easy task but everyone involved with our project paid attention to detail and listened to our requests and concerns. Each of the tradesmen did their work on time and as expected. Through many conversations, photos, computer diagrams and drawings, our visions were brought to life!! We are thoroughly enjoying our new living space, kitchen and laundry room! Special thanks to Tommy, Gail, Peter B. for always keeping my spirits up when I didn't think I'd live through the renovations. To Ron and Billy for saving the day!! To Fernando and his painting crew for their beautiful work! And again to Matt, for delivering exactly what he promised!! When can we do the rest of our house??!!!!!
