Abe Schickel & Co. has been painting houses west and south of Boston since the company says it was founded in 1985, when Abe Schickel began working out of Newton, Cambridge and Brookline before settling in Natick. Reviewers across three decades keep describing the same routine: careful surface prep before a brush ever touches the wall, and a spotless job site when the crew packs up. That pattern holds across 41 reviews collected on Google and Angi from 2022 through 2026, nearly all of them five stars. The specifics repeat: plaster and joist repair on century-old homes, color consultations before a job starts, and crews that protect floors and gardens while they work. In a 2023 review, one homeowner described a job restoring water-damaged joists and beams in a 17th-century colonial; another, also from 2023, recounted an exterior repaint finished around a wet spring in time for a wedding, without damaging the surrounding gardens. Seven reviews landed in just the past six months and none were negative, so this isn't just an old reputation coasting on volume. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active, and the Better Business Bureau gives the company an A+. The BBB profile lists interior and exterior residential painting along with wallpaper removal and hanging — the work of a painting specialist rather than a general remodeler. The company also says several of its painters have stayed on for a decade or more, one for over 20 years, which tracks with reviewers who mention working with the same crew across multiple projects. Abe Schickel & Co. is the call for a meticulous, detail-heavy paint job on an older or historic home, where plaster repair and prep work matter as much as the finish coat. With an active registration, an A+ BBB grade, and years of repeat customers describing the same careful process, there's little here to second-guess before booking.
We have used Abe for multiple painting jobs and he and his crew always do an excellent job. Great attention to details. Would recommend them to anyone.
This is the second house Abe and his crew have painted for us. The first was a 17th century colonial which needed, in addition to new paint on the clapboards, some restorative work on interior joists and beams, many of which were original to the house. The painters took great care in determining what wood needed replacing, did excellent repairs, and didn't close anything up for painting until everything was tested and finished. The paint preparation was extensive on this big rambling building, and the completed house was just beautiful, not an easy task with original boards up against three hundred years of replacements, additions, and earlier workmanship that wasn't always accurately done. Our current house, from the mid 1970s, is an elongated ranch, aka "mid century modern", with original red cedar shingles that needed to be re-stained after several years since the first time we did this. Because one side of the house bakes in long hot sunny hours, the previous stain was quite faded, while the west side was still a reasonable color. Abe sorted out the best color, and his men, some of whom had worked on our previous house, were able to match the front and back walls, leaving the shingles with the rich warm reddish brown that everyone loves about this very hardy wood. Trim around outside lighting fixtures was painted, and the preparation again was something to see, with almost as much time spent taping off sections, removing and replacing lights and electric boxes, as was done on applying the finishes. Abe came by every day on this two week project, spoke with us, the homeowners, and the men about finicky details, time lines expected, checking on colors and particulars about stains vs paint finishes, so that we knew the work was progressing without incident from beginning to end. He is available at all times if one had questions, was gracious when I changed my mind about a paint color, and was visibly concerned when some areas of stain didn't dry as quickly as we'd thought. I've never seen such sincere attention paid to quality in anyone who has worked on either of our houses, or other projects. Many of his crew have been with him for twenty years or more, which says everything about what kind of company he runs, and what kind of person he is to work with.
Abe and his crew did an excellent exterior job staining shakes and painting window/door casings on our 1894 West Newton home. The high gables were a challenge. Abe was extremely responsive with the estimate and scheduling and he kept us up to date. His happy and skillful crew worked long days and cleaned up every evening. We are very pleased with the result. David
We recently hired Abe Schickel for interior painting work and had an excellent experience from start to finish. Abe was incredibly kind, communicative and thorough. We had a great conversation during the process, and it was clear he genuinely cares about his customers and the quality of the work. His crew was outstanding — always prompt, courteous, hardworking, and very attentive to detail. They took great care in their work and the final result looks fantastic. We truly appreciated the professionalism and positive experience throughout the project and would highly recommend them. Alissa, Wayland, MA
