One disappointment, misrepresentation, defective material after another? I would stay away from this contractor.

Every step of the process was precisely the way it had been outlined. The quality of the subcontractors was first rate. I've been a homeowner for 30 years and this was my fourth time dealing with a contractor on a significant project and it was the smoothest and most satisfying experience we've had yet.

We have used them for several years and are very pleased. In the past they have built a garage and adapted our back deck by putting in new steps and a stairway. They also changed one wall in our living room to add a piano window as well as painting trim and doing other outside work. They are not always punctual but I will use them again in the future.

It started out wonderfully, but the work became progressively shoddier. The brick front steps had to be redone four times (and they still aren't right but the cost of rebuilding them would be prohibiitve). The worker did not seem experienced in masonry. The front walk ended in little pieces of brick and had to be redone by another mason the following year. The patio was left unfinished and that too had to be completed by another mason. A new shower valve was installed in my downstairs bathroom: at first the temperature was reversed so it went from hot to cold. That problem was corrected by his plumber but the valve itself failed with little use within three years. The plumber had installed the same brand of valve I was trying to replace; I had specifically requested a more reliable brand. The carpentry surrounding the patio doors was poorly installed and there is now wood rot on the sill. The shingles above the doors are uneven. I would not recommend this contractor to anyone. Mr. Melo ceased returning my calls to complete the job. He had been paid for more than the work he actually completed. I filed a complaint with the attorney general's office to be reimbursed for the unfinished work but Mr. Melo refused to comply.

I consulted with Jay Melo right from the beginning of my condo purchase process. Jay was punctual, honest, and accommodating in giving his estimates. Where he was unsure of certain aspects, he followed-up with needed answers/estimates promptly. Right from the start, Jay was very open minded to my design ideas (I had never renovated anything before!) and very receptive. He was very helpful in suggesting solutions or alternatives - he was very tactful in doing so. Jay and his crew worked productively. They always started and finished their works on time (even earlier than scheduled!). Jay always kept me in touch with time line of his works. Throughout the project, Jay has been extremely accommodating of my busy schedules (I worked 2 jobs at that time). He was never hesitant to go out of his way to help the project (picking up materials, handling returns, getting samples). He and his team were truly a blessing for me! What impressed me the most, however, was the fact that Jay and his crew were always friendly, polite, considerate and CLEAN (I was told that I should consider myself lucky to get any one of those attributes in contractor.. let alone all!). I had the unfortunate situation of having to live in the unit while it's still being completely renovated. For weeks, I had to survive the lack of access to essentials (kitchen, bath, etc). Yet, during those times, Jay and his crew had been very sensitive about my living needs. They constantly & properly cleaned up after themselves, protected/rearranged my furniture while making extra space for me, and sped up the completion of some projects to make sure my quality of life had minimal disruption. Again, I truly felt that they were a blessing to me during this complicated project! In the end, the project finished as estimated. I was extremely satisfied with the quality of their finished works. I must admit that I always am a bit 'anal-retentive' when it comes to getting things the way I want. Yet, I truly felt that Jay has given anything as I had expected....and more. Jay never claimed that his estimate was going to be cheaper than his competitors. I praise his honesty and sincerity of his estimates and actual works. Yet in the end, I can't yet put a price in all of the hard work, sensitivity, and professionalism that his works have shown me.
