Railings are what this Lawrence shop is really about — iron handrails on front steps, balcony rails, custom rod-iron work matched to a photo a customer hands them. American Design Iron Work also fabricates gates, iron doors, stairs, fire escapes, balconies and decks, and its site says the work has run through apartment complexes and condominiums as well as houses across Boston and the North Shore. The footer dates the company to 2007. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is expired. For a shop whose work includes structural exterior railings on people's steps, that's worth raising directly before you sign anything. The public history is modest — 4.7 stars across 14 Google ratings, with eight written reviews spread over roughly five years. Most describe the same things: quick turnaround, appointments kept, a design matched to what the customer asked for, and pricing that came in under competing estimates. One customer got a railing installed on stone steps and found it loose enough to be unsafe years later; the company offered a paid repair rather than a warranty fix, and that exchange is the one substantive complaint against them. Nothing has been written about them in the last six months. Worth calling for custom iron railings, gates or stair work where you want a fabricator who will match a design and quote competitively. Ask about the registration status, ask what warranty covers the posts and anchoring specifically, and get that in writing before any deposit.

In October 2022 American designer Ironwork installed 2 rails on either side of stone stairs leading down from our garden to the sidewalk. The cost was $1,250.00. Two and a half years later, one of those railings is dangerously unstable, swinging from side to side when grasped. I contacted this company to inform them of their poor workmanship and request a repair, stating that this situation is not safe for my 81 yr old physically disabled husband. They responded by saying they’d repair the railing if I paid them $300. I am aghast. Their poor workmanship has resulted in the railing posts losing their cement plugs that packed them into our stone steps. Responsibility, etiquette and decency would have served both this company and one of their customers. Do not use this company.
