Aurora Fuel Co. Inc. sells heating oil; on the Better Business Bureau, the company describes itself as specializing in heating fuel for both commercial and residential customers. A recent customer said they ran out of oil while waiting for a scheduled delivery that kept slipping, that the company's website was down and its emergency mailbox was full, and that the admin later said the truck had completely broken down. That customer called another oil company that would deliver the same day. The same customer wrote that the company had been shut down for a few months in 2024/2025. A recent customer who called for an oil delivery said they were told 3-5 days, that a week later no one had shown up or could be reached, and that the company had charged their credit card for the delivery. A 2026 customer said the company replaced an outdoor oil tank and serviced the furnace, then did not respond to its after-hours emergency line twice when the heat went out. That 2026 customer said another oil company found a failed blower motor that Aurora had not caught. A 2026 customer said two men on a service call explained the problem and fixed it. On r/RhodeIsland, a 2021 commenter said they had been with Aurora Fuel for over twenty years, and a 2022 commenter said they had been with the company for 7 years. Its Better Business Bureau grade is F.

I have been using Aurora Fuel since 2023, except for the few months in 2024/2025 when they were shut down… I called them Tuesday 8/25 at 1:24pm and left a message. I called them back at 3:22 and 3:47 and never heard back. I was finally able to get a hold of them Wednesday 8/26. They said they’d have someone out either Monday or Tuesday. Monday 8/31- no delivery that is fine. I can wait till Tuesday but at this point have ran out of oil. Tuesday 9/1- excited for a hot shower when I get home from work after 5pm. No oil. I leave a message on their answering machine. Their message says you can to their website (it’s down) or call the emergency number but the mailbox is full. Wednesday 9/2- I call at 8:12am and the admin says you’re scheduled for today! No mention of the Monday or Tuesday date. I do mention I was told either Monday or Tuesday. No response. Wednesday at 3:08. Admin calls and says the truck is delayed but it’s the next town over in Richmond. No oil is delivered. Thursday morning I call back several times before they answer. The admin says they never said the truck was delayed but that it had completely broken down. She confirmed the oil was scheduled for Tuesday and then Wednesday but no explanation for the date change. Again says I’ll be getting oil today. I call another oil company that will deliver today. I call back Aurora to let them know I’m getting a delivery from elsewhere. The admin asks me if I’m sure because I’ll be getting oil from them today. I let her know I don’t believe her because of the situation thus far, and that I’d like the owner to know how his business is being operated, and she responds “Can’t please them all” before hanging up on me. They are the cheapest around but this is the second time in 2 years they’ve been extremely unreliable- there was even a news article about it. I’ll spend the $180 extra a year going with a slightly more expensive, but reliable and same day service, company.
Called a week ago for oil delivery and was told 3-5 days for delivery. They still have not showed up. No call. Cannot get ahold of anyone from the company. Answering machine is full. They also charged my credit card yesterday for delivery! They used to be great but unfortunately this is no longer the case.
We have been loyal customers with Aurora for 5 years now with only good things to say, but this will be the last time using them. They replaced our outdoor oil tank right before a big snow storm 3 weeks ago, and a few weeks before that they had serviced our furnace and replaced all of the necessary parts. The day after the snowstorm, our heat goes out and will not come back on. We call Aurora's after hour emergency line, no response, we leave a voicemail, no call back. It's 9 degrees outside. My husband does everything he can himself to get the heat on so the pipes don't freeze (again) and it works. But for the next 3 weeks, the heat is on and off. We never heard back from Aurora. The heat goes off again after hours so we call the emergency line, no response or call back for the second time. We call in the morning and Aurora is able to come out same day, great. They advised that it was working and they replaced a nozzle and cad cell, $200, fine. We get home and no, the heat is not working, so we call another oil company since Aurora was leaving a bad taste in our mouths. The other company finds the problem immediately (failed blower motor) and is astounded that Aurora did not see this immediately. They also advised that our furnace is on it's way out and will likely need to be replaced in the near future...Aurora had been out to our house many times in less than 2 months, servicing our furnace twice, and somehow didn't catch these large issues. I called and asked if there was anything they could do, ie refund, since they did not fix the issue and left us hanging to fend for ourselves many times. I am still awaiting a call back, although I don't think it will change my mind to stay with Aurora.
Great experience today with my service call. The two men that came were great. They spent the time to explain the problem and fixed it accordingly. They were both personable and friendly. I highly recommend Aurora to people all the time for their oil delivery but now I will make sure everyone knows how fast and reliable their service is too. Thank you!
