Basnett Design-Build-Remodel is a Littleton, Massachusetts design-build firm founded and run by Jim Basnett, who began his residential construction career in 1982 and later incorporated the company after co-founding it with Mark Taylor. The firm describes itself as a residential design, construction, and building-science-driven energy-retrofit specialist, and its own history credits it with completing an early deep-energy retrofit project — a focus borne out by Building Science Corporation's own case-study pages, which name Basnett Design-Build-Remodel as the contractor on a documented Deep Energy Retrofit funded through National Grid's Massachusetts pilot program. The written record on file is dated but consistent: four Houzz reviews, all five stars, from 2015 and 2016. In a 2016 review, a homeowner who hired the company to build a master suite over their garage said the crew showed up daily for three months, worked efficiently and cleanly, and came in on time and on budget with regular progress updates. Another 2016 account describes an attic converted into a finished bedroom — new heating, air conditioning, recessed lighting, foam insulation, and a window — calling the work high quality and within budget. A third 2016 review praises a Cape-house kitchen remodel, from initial design through follow-up, as an outstanding job done with attention to detail. A 2015 account describes owner Jim Basnett as always extremely responsive and receptive from the first phone call, after the homeowner noticed his sign and trucks on a neighbor's remodel. Before booking, it's worth asking for references from more recent projects — the written record here predates the last five years, even though the company's own service list and self-reported licensing (Massachusetts CSL #043436, HIC #132490, and an EPA lead-safe certification, none verified against a registry here) suggest ongoing operation. The company's own website also gives two different figures for its history, a 28+ years homepage banner alongside a separate FAQ claim of operating since 1990, worth clarifying directly. Basnett Design-Build-Remodel looks like the right call for a homeowner planning a substantial addition, kitchen remodel, or an energy-efficiency-focused renovation who wants a small, owner-led design-build team rather than a high-volume general contractor — confirm current licensing status and ask to see more recent project photos or references before signing on.
“Project Team: Basnett Design/Build/Remodel, Contractor; Building Science Corporation, Consultants and DER Technical Support; National Grid, Massachusetts, DER Pilot Program Administrator/Sponsor”
“BSC worked with the builder to resolve technical issues through on-site visits and remote support. Over the course of two different site visits, the window flashing and insulation details were reviewed at different stages.”
Basnett Design-Build-Remodel turned an unused attic space into a nice finished bedroom with heating, air-condition, and recess lighting. They also upgraded thermal envelope in the surrounding area by providing foam insulation. As part of this work a new window was installed and the exterior painted. All the work was done with high quality, within the budget, and with friendly manner. Any questions were promptly answered, any requests for change of scope (there were very few and they were minor) were resolved in most reasonable way.
We hired Bassnett to build a master suite over our garage. They were efficient, professional, and clean. They showed up everyday day for 3 months until the job was done. They came in on time and on budget. They communicated with us every few days about the progress of the project. We are extremely happy with the work they did.
The entire team at Basnett Design Build was wonderful to work with. From preliminary design, to defining the project scope, implementation and follow up they did an outstanding job. I am very pleased with the outcome of my kitchen remodel in my Cape house. I recommend Basnett Design Build to anyone that is serious about implementing a renovation or build with attention to detail and enduring quality and craftsmanship.
Jim Basnett of Basnett Design-Build-Remodel, is a builder that we discovered from seeing his sign and trucks in our neighborhood here in Lexington. He did extensive remodeling and addition work on a house on our street. Based upon the work we saw him doing with our neighbor, as well as all of the outstanding reviews on Angie's List, we asked Jim to help us with our own plans. From our first call, Jim was always extremely responsive and receptive, happy to talk to us and guide us. He sent us a list of references - a very long list, I might add, of clients that he worked with in the past - a huge percentage of which are actually continuing clients, meaning clients that are so happy with his work, when they want to do a new project, they call Jim back again. We are going to be leaving Lexington and moving to a nearby town, where we will be tearing down a rundown wreck of a house and building a handicapped accessible ranch in it's place. We had many conversations with Jim about the process. We had not yet bought a property when we first began talking, so he walked us through the steps, ideas, speaking specifically about land drainage, insulation, energy, costs, and countless other details, so that we had an idea of what to look for in a property, and how to proceed with the teardown and new construction. He looked at a few properties for us online, giving his input, and offering to come out to see and assess potential properties for us. Very importantly, he recommended a few realtors to act as buyers agents for us, and we did very happily engage one of them. Ultimately, we ended up not using Jim, but only because we found a different excellent builder (I never knew even one existed, let alone TWO!) who's schedule happened to be open and could begin our project immediately. Timing for us is fairly tight, details not important, so that was a key deciding factor for us. We can't thank him enough for his dedication to us, his invaluable advice, his bestowing to us of an excellent on-point realtor who cares about customer service more than her commission and his big picture view of how being moral, open and honest, is always the best policy.
