I received an estimate today from Better Built Basements associate Michael McKenzie. Mike was incredibly friendly, knowledgable, and communicative. The customer service provided during the estimate was fantastic, and he was able to show photos of actual work that they have done as it related tosimilar work required for my basement job. He let me know where I could save some money but also kept it real with me about what was a good idea and what was a bad idea. This company provides great customer service, and it seems like the provide high quality work with high quality products.
I had one basement window that had the dryer hose vented through it. The window needed to be replaced the the vent moved to the outside wall. It was a small project but Randy still gave it his utmost attention explaining what the best solution would be. Dave and Dominick came out to do the job. They were very professional and paid attention to detail. I'm glad I called Better Built Basements and I hope to have them replace the remaining windows in the near future.
Best basement remodeling Co in CT by far. Used them 2xs in 2 different homes Also Kyle the 1 star review is fake
Editing my original review after using BBB a second time. We used Better Built to finish our basement last year and had a great experience. The employees were always professional, neat and on time. We saw a lot of the same guys throughout our project and it was nice to know who would be showing up when. The prices were reasonable compared to other estimates we received and the quality of the work was very good. In fact, we were so happy that we hired them to remodel our kitchen this year. Unfortunately, we did not have the same positive experience. Better Built's communication was spotty at times during our basement renovation and abysmal during our kitchen. We were promised drawings within two weeks of signing the contracts. Just days before demo, we still had no plans. We finally received a drawing of our kitchen with different color cabinets. During the design process, we would send questions to Randy (e.g. could this work, what about this, etc.). On more than one occasion, he wouldn't respond to our inquiry but would order work done. For instance, we asked about placing a mini fridge under a coffee bar. We sent a link with measurements to see if what we had would fit. Rather than respond, he just ordered electrical work for said refrigerator BEFORE telling us that it wouldn't fit. A wall was extended without our approval because again, Randy just went ahead and ordered the work before finalizing anything with us. We were charged for all of the work done even though it was done without our approval. Randy also insisted that we had ordered hardware that we did not order. Thankfully I asked for a price breakdown otherwise I wouldn't haven't known that I was being charged almost $800 for hardware I did not want. Towards the end of our project, we asked two of the project managers about appliance installation. It's evident that no one talks to one another as neither of them could give us an answer. For transparency, we had missed this line in our contract (BB does not install appliances). But it would have been nice for them to tell us that rather than all of the "well, what did so and so tell you?" Speaking of giving us a runaround, our contract stated that our cabinets and countertops would be donated for a tax deduction. We had to ask multiple times for the donation receipt. Initially, we were just told "there are no receipts." However, we are not willing to risk taking a deduction without a receipt. It took several back and forth emails to finally get a donation receipt. Our project went a full month past the scheduled completion date. I understand that things happen but no one communicated anything to us. We were also assured multiple times that our cabinets would be delivered on time. When we were missing pieces or replacement doors were backordered, no one thought it was worth the time to shoot us an email and explain what was going on. At the end of the day, we are happy with our kitchen but glad to be done with Better Built. The contractors who actually came and worked on our house did a great job. Throughout the project, we expressed our frustrations multiple times with Randy and Jim. The best we got was a "sorry for the miscommunication." As business owners, a simple phone call and earnest apology would have gone a long way. It seemed as though they couldn't have cared less. The only time we every received truly reliable communication was when a payment was due. This is probably fine for a basement or spare bathroom, but not for a kitchen or other large project. Should you decide to use them, a few tips: Make it VERY clear when you are simply asking a question and not asking or telling them to do something. Ask for full price breakdowns. Know that they do not pass on any contractor/trade/professional discounts that they receive through retailers like Home Depot. If you find a fixture or tile on sale, purchase it yourself and let them credit you.
Better Built Basements has never disappointed. We’ve had our basement finished along with work done in our living and dining room. Always professional, affordable and efficient. Special shoutout to craftsmen & painters Mike, Jeremy and Noi. Thank you.
