Bill Wenzel Heating & Air Conditioning works out of 16 Broadway in Amherst and is, by its own account, a family business founded in 1997 with three generations of Wenzels in the heating trade and more than 25 years of geothermal work behind it. The company holds New Hampshire mechanical business entity licence MBE2401641, verified active against the state's OPLC registry, and it is separately verified as an active HVAC licence holder in Massachusetts under registration 455-SM-B. Its own site lists it as an IGSHPA certified installer, a WaterFurnace dealer and a founding member of the New England Geothermal Professional Association. Ground-source heat pumps are what customers write about. A homeowner in August 2026 had been left with ground loops in the ground after a previous contractor walked away from the job; Bill Wenzel quoted to finish the other company's design, and the reviewer — who had collected several quotes — called the pricing fair for New England geothermal work and the crew patient through a long job. Others describe the geothermal system diagnosed and running again, an air exchanger serviced, and a two-month-old installation with a minor leak repaired the same day it was reported. Response time is the other consistent theme. A forced-air motor that failed at 3am in February 2024 was assessed late that morning and replaced by early afternoon; another caller got a technician the next morning; a December 2025 customer had a geothermal fault fixed before the cold set in. One 2023 reviewer got a Saturday call back from Matt to talk through the problem and a Sunday follow-up about when a technician would arrive. The one friction in the record is diagnostic time. A May 2024 reviewer needed four visits before a geothermal HVAC fault was fully fixed and initially expected to pay for the unsuccessful ones — he then corrected his own review to say the first two visits were not charged and the last two solved it. A specialist choice rather than a general heating company: if the system is ground-source, this is a firm whose reviewers describe rescuing other contractors' work. Ask what the loop-field design assumptions are and how service calls are billed when a fault takes more than one visit.
“Wenzel just replace my heating system/furnace and did a great job.”
“We love Crawford Vogel and Wenzel for everything”
I cannot say enough good things about Bill, Matt, and their team. Exactly the professionals you want. We had started installing ground source heat pumps at our house, but our previous contractor abandoned the project after putting in the ground loops. For a few months they kept telling me they would come install the ground loop in a month, then finally nothing. I reached out to Bill Wenzel. He gave me a good quote to finish the original company's design. GSHPs in New England are not cheap by any measure, but having gotten a bunch of quotes, Bill's are very fair. He was also very patient. It took a long time to get our financing sorted out from the mess with the previous company before we could move forward. When I asked about an alternative design that would have one unit for the house with a chase, Bill had a duct subcontractor out within the week and figured out that it was feasible. This saved us a bunch of money. BTW an extra shout out to Dave Thibeault and his son, who did our duct work. They were tidy, communicative, accommodating, and cleaned up after themselves. Amidst all the delays, the 30% federal tax credits for heat pumps were repealed. Suddenly we had until the end of the year to complete the install or lose tens of thousands in tax credits, and there were literally dozens of people ahead of us. Bill was extremely candid about the length of the queue and how unlikely it was he could do it, but he underpromised and overdelivered. We were fully installed at the beginning of December. I know that was an absolutely insane time for them, but they never expressed any impatience whenever I called, and I must have been one of 60 or more frantic customers. We've completed our first cooling and heating season, and the unit (Waterfurnace 7) has been a champ. We've stayed comfortable during this unusually cold winter. In January, we added about $250 to our normal electric bill; the cost for oil would have been over $600 for sure. Our ground loop entering temperature never went below about 36F. We've had two minor issues, one a dip switch that was set incorrectly, the other a clog in the drain line. Of course both problems happened outside working hours, but Matt called me back within 15 minutes. They were easy to fix. If you are getting ground-source heatpumps/geothermal heating in their service area, Wenzel is hands down the company to choose.
Great Company. They responded fast when we had an issue with our geothermal and were able to get our system fixed before the cold weather came.
Excellent service each and every time I’ve used them. Highly recommended
Great Service as always.
The final results were great but the process getting there required multiple visits and tests. I still had to pay for the unsuccessful visits. I WAS WRONG!! He did not charge me for the 1st 2 visits. The 3rd and 4th visits completely fixed the geothermal HVAC system. They did a great job. Thank you el.
