“Tour of Black Earth Compost, Manchester-by-the-Sea”
Our family has been composting for several years now and we have made a big effort to eat healthier and rely less on ready-made and processed foods. My grocery cart is now filled with lots of fruits and vegetables, which means more food prep—but also more scraps to nourish the soil. It feels great knowing that the same choices that nourish our bodies can also help nourish the soil. It’s a simple, daily action that benefits both our health and the environment. I hope more people will recognize how these small, everyday choices can add up to make a meaningful difference and help create a healthier, more sustainable future for our children and our planet. Friends and neighbors have also noticed a significant reduction in the amount of trash they generate since they started composting. Some have been using Brookline’s Food Waste Drop-Off bins and love the convenience of bringing their food scraps along when they head out. Our Brookline Public Schools have students composting during lunch. All we need is to have their families embrace the same habits at home. By working together, we can reinforce what our children are learning at school and take another important step toward creating a healthier, more sustainable, and livable future for the next generation.
Been using Black Earth Compost for years now, first in Cambridge and now in Gloucester! Not only is it good for the planet, but it also prevents food smells and kitchen trash in our home. Collection is so easy and inexpensive. In the past year alone, we’ve diverted 240+ lbs of food waste from the landfill! Love supporting a Gloucester local business doing great things.
Black Earth has cut my food waste problem entirely. I had been backyard composting since 1998, but the rats in Belmont are such a nuisance! Then I heard about Black Earth Compost in 2018 and have been a happy customer since. I love their bags of compost each spring. And as I said earlier, my food waste, coffee grounds, etc get composted. They even do bones! And dairy!
I live in Hopkinton, MA and get curbside pickup of Black Earth Compost once a week. This service is great because all of our food waste can go in it -- more than we could if we were doing backyard composting. The service reliably picks up, and also conveniently brings more bags with the pickup when I request them through the store. Composting has changed my perspective on waste, dramatically reducing our trash to a kitchen bag every ~2 weeks (which doesn't smell). Now when we are away or visiting family in other areas that don't have composting, it feels weird be be putting egg shells, banana peels, tea bags, corn husks, watermelon rinds, etc in the trash. I was happy when Black Earth became available in my in-laws town on the Cape at the transfer station, where they bring their compost now too. I am happy to be part of diverting food waste from landfills and incineration, and instead contributing to the creation of nutrient rich soil. I look forward to when this is more commonplace for both residents and businesses. I recommend using Black Earth compost in whatever form is available to you -- residential or business curbside pickup, at a community location, or for events.
Fantastic company, great communication, easy to use website, and well-respected municipal and business partnerships.
