An old house with nothing square is the hardest test in finish carpentry, and that is the job a Danvers homeowner described this spring: custom shelving and bathroom built-ins by Jay Sweeney that look like they have always been part of the house. Blue Jay Carpentry is Jay's one-person shop, working out of Danvers across the North Shore within about a 20-mile radius. He describes it as family-owned, with his wife Maura running the business side, and says he spent over 15 years in commercial and residential carpentry — starting as after-school help at his uncle's carpentry business — before concentrating on high-end finish work. The company gives no founding year for itself. What he is hired for is consistent: built-in cabinets, shelving, trim and wall treatments, doors and windows, decks and exterior trim. One reviewer this June singled out his attention to detail on that old-house job; another in May named quality work, excellent communication and fair pricing, and made a point of how tidy he kept the site — they live in a small house with a toddler and never had to worry about tools or materials being left around. A March reviewer described built-in cabinets that came out beautifully and a process that stayed smooth because he was communicative and thorough start to finish. The honest limit is volume. Three reviews, all from 2026, is a short public record — encouraging and entirely recent, but not yet a deep track record, and he is one carpenter rather than a crew.
