Boston Standard is a full plumbing, heating, cooling, and electrical outfit based in Dorchester, working across a wide swath of eastern Massachusetts — roughly 130 towns according to its own listings — with financing options, membership plans, and self-reported 24-hour availability. It holds Master Plumbing, Gas-fitting, and Sheet Metal licensing (self-reported, not independently verified against the state registry), EPA Universal and NATE certifications, and was named a 2021 'Contractor of Excellence' by the trade publication Contracting Business. The bulk of the written record, spanning 2014 through 2025, describes competent, well-communicated work: named technicians — Carlos, Anthony, James D., the crew of Dylan, Pedro and Dan — are repeatedly credited with explaining the job, showing up on time, and handling mini-split, heat-pump, and furnace work cleanly. On HomeAdvisor and Angi, where the company carries a much larger sample of 346 ratings on each platform, the average sits at 4.6★, with more than three-quarters of ratings at 5 stars. But a cluster of detailed, credible complaints from 2021 through 2024 stands out and is worth taking seriously. A 2023 review describes three air conditioners installed a few years earlier that still run noisy and leak water after more than 30 service visits, with the customer weighing legal action over roughly $25,000 spent. A 2024 review reports an HVAC installation that the company's own technician later called a bad job — with Boston Standard then declining to cover the cost of fixing it and customer service going silent for two weeks. A 2022 review from a licensed engineer with a refrigeration-technician certification lays out a detailed disputed diagnosis. Separately, a 2022 Houzz review and a 2022 Angi review both describe no-shows within scheduled arrival windows with little communication, and a 2021 Reddit post describes a $681 bill to replace a $20 part after being told a quote would come before any work started. Those written accounts sit at odds with the much larger platform averages above — a real tension worth naming rather than resolving one way. The negative accounts are specific enough to be credible on their own terms, but they represent a small slice of a company whose broader rated volume runs strongly positive. Given that split, it's worth asking for a firm, written quote before work begins and following up in writing if a scheduled arrival window is missed — most jobs here appear to go smoothly, but the exceptions on file are serious enough to plan around.
“My furnace stopped working on Monday night. When I called on Tuesday morning my usual contractors had no availability until Friday so I called Boston Standard. They brag about having a van full of parts so there's no waiting to order them. I was told the tech would give me a quote before starting the work, but instead he worked for an hour and a half, was mostly nonverbal except to rant about my Nest thermostat, and then presented me with a $681 bill to replace my flame sensor - a $20 part that he _didn't_ have in the van.”

Tony and Ollie were AMAZING!! Definitely hire them again for any electrical work!!
This was our first time using Boston Standard and we had a good experience. Dylan and Pedro installed our mini splits over a couple days. They were great and answered all our questions and were accommodating with me working from home. Dan showed up on the 2nd day and was also very professional and walked me through the install in our basement.
Absolutely unbelieve horrible service and customer service. Had installation of HVAC done through them, their own service person that reviewed the installation said it was terrible job (not knowing they installed it in the first place). Now they don't want to cover the cost of fixing the issue. Customer service took more than 2 weeks to answer our call and hang up on us. Very, very disappointing for company that charges premium for there services. Definitely look other places if you are considering them!!!
Very reliable, prompt, and pred.
Carlos was professional and a good communicator. He listened and explained the job and called out changes when needed (the compressor was higher than expected so a circuit breaker fixture had to be moved.)
