Fifty-two years in one town, four employees, and the president still listed as the customer contact. Robert J. Carroll's Built Well Building & Remodeling has traded out of Danvers since 1974 by its BBB file, and the work it takes on is whole-project rather than piecemeal: custom homes, additions, kitchens and baths, decks and porches. On Houzz it sits at 4.8 out of 5 — but from six reviews, and the newest of those was posted in 2020. The written accounts are dated, not missing. Two of the six also come from trade peers rather than homeowners: a kitchen designer who says she refers her own clients, and a design firm. That is a normal way a builder of this age accumulates praise, and it is still not the same thing as a customer's account. Fifteen project galleries sit alongside the reviews, weighted toward kitchen and bath work, which lines up with what both directory listings say the company sells. Its BBB page is an A+ that also states, plainly, that the business is not BBB Accredited — two separate facts, not one. No complaints and no government actions are published there. Two things to raise on the call. The company's own Houzz page claims "over 35 years", while BBB dates the business to 1974, so ask which figure describes the corporation and which describes Carroll's own career. And because the newest public praise is now five years old, ask for two or three recent references rather than relying on what is posted. As with any Massachusetts remodeler taking on additions and full rooms, ask for the home improvement contractor registration number and check it with the Office of Consumer Affairs before you sign. If you want a small, long-standing North Shore builder for a kitchen, a bath, or an addition — and you are willing to do the reference-checking yourself — this is a reasonable call.

Working with Bob and the BuiltWell team was fantastic in all respects. Beyond doing excellent work, they know what it takes to do a successful home renovation: clear, open, and honest communication; responsiveness; cleanliness; and being true to their word. Our project was a big one for us: we switched and updated the location of our kitchen and family room and remodeled our dining room. The entire first floor was involved - all while we continued to live in the house. The BuiltWell team's sensitivity to our needs made a huge difference; we felt like we had friends working in our house every day. We wholeheartedly recommend BuiltWell.
