Burgess Builders is essentially one man in Dracut — David Burgess, working under a Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration the state confirms is active in his name. The Better Business Bureau puts the business's start at 2008, lists a single employee, and files it under the alternate name David W. Burgess Contracting. What reputation exists lives on Reddit, in r/LowellMA, and it is unusually specific for that. A commenter in June 2025 itemized their household's work — new back porch stairs, a replaced sliding door, a bathroom added in the basement — then a second list for their mother: all her windows, a door, another slider, the basement entry rebuilt, rot repaired on the shed and its door rebuilt. In October 2024 another commenter said Burgess had put a bathroom in their basement and done several jobs for their mother as well. Two more, writing in January and February 2024, said the price came in lowest and the work was good, one noting brand-name products rather than cut corners. The counterweight is a single commenter in January 2025 who said Burgess built their family a home addition twenty years ago and that the house is now falling apart. One anonymous account of long-ago work — but specific about the kind of job, a structural addition, this business still takes. The paperwork rewards a careful eye. BuildZoom separately prints three further Massachusetts HIC numbers for him — #205985, #124729 and #161958 — each marked inactive and cancelled at some point, and lists a City of Newton electrical contractor licence it calls active in one line while giving it a December 2022 expiry in the next. None of those directory entries is a verification; only the state's active registration is. For the work the threads actually describe — a deck, stairs, doors and windows, a basement bathroom, an addition — Burgess is a registered, long-established local option with several neighbors saying they hired him more than once. Confirm HIC #173755 with the state's Consumer Affairs office yourself, get scope and price in writing, and ask directly how he handles structural additions, given the one complaint on record.
