Half a deck, built out over water, with town permits in the way — that was the May 2026 job, and the homeowner's review says Shane Burlingame took it on and took on the town for the permits. Burlingame Remodeling is a one-man operation in Sturbridge, and Shane Burlingame is the one man. He started it after nearly two years of carpentry and handyman work under the name Chisel and Saw; his site describes him as a licensed general contractor with a bachelor's degree, and lists bathroom, kitchen, basement and addition remodeling, decks and porches across Southern Central Massachusetts. The twelve Angi reviews all date to 2022, back when people were calling him for the smaller stuff: railings installed on patio steps, flooring and baseboards, a last-minute project finished on a tight schedule, one job that landed under an already reasonable estimate. An artist writing in July 2022 described explaining the vision for a custom table and handing the rest to him. Another 2022 customer said he came out quickly to measure, worked through every aspect of the build down to picking stain colors from samples, and turned around a build they had expected to take a few weeks. The 2026 work is bigger. In June he pulled out a set of front steps and had new ones in within two days; that same month, a homeowner who had him redo a bathroom singled out the tile, the kind of spacing you can tell someone fussed over. In April, another customer left three words: "Best in business." The thing to sort out early is scope. Angi and HomeAdvisor still list him for handyman jobs and thermostat installs, while his own site sells whole-room remodels and additions — so be concrete about what your project actually involves when you call. The deck is the useful precedent: a difficult site, permits to chase, one person carrying both. If you want the owner holding the tools — a deck, a set of stairs, a bathroom, a piece of custom carpentry — this is that kind of shop. Ask how he would sequence and permit a job your size, and get the scope in writing before the first delivery lands.
Shane was great in replacing our front steps. He was timely in planning/scheduling the project and removed the old stairs/replaced with new stairs within 2 days. We are so happy with how they came out!
Shane did an excellent job with redoing our bathroom. He was very communicative and timely. His tile work is incredible and you can tell he put extra effort in to make sure everything was spaced properly. Would highly recommend.
If you are looking for someone who is attentive, productive, and follows through on every detail, you need to call Shane. Our project was to replace half of our deck, situated partially over water. Shane accepted the project and took on the town for permits. By the time the permits came through, the snow had come and gone, and other jobs came up, but Shane was still able to complete the job before the season opened. I am more than happy to give a referral.
