One Houzz reviewer said they had known Patrick McDonagh and his crew for eight years and had used Casla for nearly every major project in their house — a full basement remodel, a mudroom, interior work. Another, writing the same day in January 2023, had come by a neighbour's referral and was braced for trouble in a 150-year-old house; they singled out the attention to detail instead. The third account, from September 2022, runs the other way and it is specific. That customer wrote that there were red flags from the start: weeks of attempts to get a coherent proposal together, and emails answered only when convenient. Houzz's listing adds missed site visits and disputed workmanship to that review, with an owner response attached. Casla Property Services is Patrick McDonagh's company, with three employees according to its BBB file, which dates the business to April 2004 and grades it A+ without accreditation. BuildZoom counts 26 permitted projects since 2005 across Newton, Brookline, Belmont and Cambridge, and lists construction supervisor and home improvement contractor registrations for the company — those come from BuildZoom's own records rather than a registry check. Houzz also lists an RICS Chartered Surveyors credential. The work is whole-house rather than single-trade: new construction and additions, kitchens, bathrooms, basements, siding and windows, plus construction management. Its own site adds attic conversions, decks and patios, painting, MEP work and hardscaping, and describes a Newton base, where the BBB and BuildZoom files put the company at a Winthrop address and the site says fifteen years in business against the BBB's twenty-two. Sort out which entity and which address go on the contract before you sign one. The earliest account on file, from August 2016, describes a bathroom remodel and a small addition that created an entryway and mudroom, with the customer calling the work beautiful and the process a pleasure. For an older Boston-area house that needs a real remodel rather than one trade, McDonagh has the permit history and the returning clients to justify the conversation. Given what that 2022 customer described, make the proposal itself the test: ask for a written scope and schedule up front, and see how fast it comes back.
Casla Property Services was referred to us by our neighbor and we are very happy with the work Patrick and his team did. The work and attention to detail is excellent and the service matched the high quality. Also, and to our pleasant surprise because we have a 150 yr. old house, they stayed within budget and on schedule even though they encountered a number of surprises along the way. We are very happy with the final results and would recommend Patrick and his team for any project, big or small.
I've known Patrick and his crew for 8 years through their excellent work. I used general contracting services of Casla Property services for pretty much every major remodeling project in our house so far. It included a complete basement remodel, creating a mud room, doing the interior and structural work of a porch enclosure and exterior painting of our very large barn. Through out all these projects, Patrick and his crew demonstrated diligence and ingenuity in problem solving without pilling up charges for every unseen problem they encountered. During our basement remodeling we discovered a previously unknown storm water issue and Patrick resolved it with a French drain near where the water was seeping in when everyone else was talking of entire basement foundation waterproofing. Another time there were some supply chain issues with custom material and Patrick's crew took time to overcome it with making the custom wood boards themselves onsite with square stock to not delay the project by 2 more weeks. Also Casla property services never pressed payment outside of the state law, in fact every time they requested a payment, it was for already successfully completed work. I highly recommend Casla Property services to anyone and will use them in the future again for my general contracting needs.
Really lousy experience unfortunately. There were red flags from the start, looking back, I should have used someone else. He seemed to have trouble putting together a coherent proposal despite multiple attempts over weeks worth of time. He only responds to emails when convenient, would ask for a payment and then leave on vacation despite being behind schedule. He would skip site visits even when he asked me to take time off of work. Anytime there was a mistake he would fight about it instead of simply acknowledging it and fixing the issue. It often comes off as straight up dishonesty or a lack of integrity. He even had his employee installing kitchen backsplash, spacing the tiles with pieces of cardboard boxes instead of traditional spacers, and then tried to sell that as standard practice.
Patrick McDonagh of Casla is a top notch GC. He does beautiful, quality work and is a lovely person. It was always a pleasure interacting with him. Patrick did a bathroom remodel for us and also a small addition that provided us with an entryway/mudroom area. We are delighted with the finished product and enjoyed working with Patrick and his crew throughout the process. I would recommend him highly to anyone.
