Coastal Building and Remodeling, run by Michael Lysik out of Amesbury, is a small renovation outfit whose real specialty shows up project by project — attic conversions, additions, whole-house renovations — rather than any one signature job. The written record, though not large, is remarkably consistent: a 2022 review describes finishing an attic and tying it into the second floor with constant communication; a 2023 review covers a pull-down attic staircase installed exactly to spec; and a design professional's 2020 account of a Salem renovation praises thorough scoping and quick, creative fixes for the surprises that came up mid-project. A 2019 review calls out the attention to detail and material choices on a full house renovation. Across platforms the pattern holds — 5.0 from 6 Thumbtack reviews (100% five-star, hired four times) and a 5-star BuildZoom rating. Permit records back that up: BuildZoom's data shows 10 permitted projects, four in the last three years, ranging from about $7,000 to $508,000 across towns from Newburyport to Methuen, and puts the company's BuildZoom score above 99% of Massachusetts licensed contractors. BuildZoom lists an active Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration (#198816) as of this April, alongside two earlier registrations shown as inactive. Worth knowing: HomeAdvisor and Angi list ten years of self-reported experience and free estimates, but neither has a review yet, and the company's own marketing casts a wide net — bathroom, kitchen and general remodeling — that the written reviews above don't specifically confirm for kitchens or baths. Ask to see recent kitchen or bath work directly if that's the project in mind.

I hired Mike to install a pull down staircase to my attic above the garage. I would have checked all 5 options above about what I liked about Mike and his company. Mike is knowledgeable, does fantastic work, completed the job exactly the way I wanted it done, and is very reasonable. He put down a plywood floor in the attic and he is always conscious about the details. I will definitely use Mike in the future for any construction projects, and will recommend him to friends and family. Details: Crawl space or attic, replace parts of existing structure, less than 500 sq ft, home, I am the owner. General Contracting. Hired on Thumbtack.
We hired Mike and Coastal Building and Remodeling to finish our attic space and connect it to the second floor unit of our house. I would recommend Mike to anyone, communicated every step in the process, made adjustments for us and very professional. Details: Sketches or a basic idea, crawl space or attic, new custom construction, replace parts of existing structure, repair existing structure, 1,000-1,500 sq ft, home, I am the owner. General Contracting. Hired on Thumbtack.
As a designer, I assisted homeowners in planning and designing a major update to their home in Salem. My homeowners hired Mike after meeting with two other contractors to oversee a renovation of their home. Mike was professional, punctual, and thoroughly scoped the project from the get go. Although his pricing wasn't the lowest in the initial bid process, it encompassed the full scope so there were very little surprises that popped up, and for the minor unforeseeable ones that did we were able to quickly pivot with creative solutions. His team, including an electrician and flooring installer did a great job, and we are all delighted with the results so far. Mikes work quality and knowledge is also superior. Recommend him for a trustworthy and transparent process. Details: Single room remodel, living room. Home Remodeling. Hired on Thumbtack.
I bought my home in Merrimac, MA, which was a "flip". It was a small Colonial that was taken down to the studs and redone. Walls were removed downstairs so as to make it an open concept. It is bright and inviting. The materials used were of very good quality. I have had many friends who have asked me who did it and were impressed with the attention to detail. I did not hire Coastal as it was listed for sale. I have lived in the house now for a year and am pleased.
Total house renovation. Micheal is a top notch contractor whose work is impecable. His attention to detail, selection of materials, workmanship, and planning skills are all equally outstanding. We've worked with several different contractors throughout our adult lives, and Michael is by far the best. He is gifted in his ability to transform bland rooms into beautiful yet functional spaces.
