Paul Vieira has run Contemporary Contracting out of North Reading since 2002, and the BBB records exactly one employee — which explains a lot about how the work reads. Everything runs through him; the subcontractors come and go around him. When that works, it works well. A December 2020 customer described a small North Reading Cape turned into a Colonial: a full second story, a finished attic, a new attached garage, with the chimney, the finish work and the new bathrooms all singled out. In August 2017 another had 20 replacement windows put into a 90-year-old house — original molding saved and reinstalled, weight boxes packed with insulation, exterior trim painted. A May 2023 customer doing a full bathroom renovation described a prompt quote, a stated time frame, and steady communication throughout. The December 2018 review is the one to read before you call. That customer wrote that Vieira didn't use a level, demanded more money to keep subcontractors on site, clogged a bathtub with cement and grout — she hired a plumber herself to cut the pipes and repair it — and plastered over fire sprinkler heads, refusing to fix them until final payment was made. The company replied on the same page that the customer had terminated the contract and the matter was in litigation. That is one account out of fourteen and it is seven years old, but the specifics concern safety and payment leverage, and they deserve a direct question. Two other things sit in the file. BuildZoom notes on its own page that it could not verify a licence with the licensing board and has no active licence on file — BuildZoom's record, not a registry check, but worth confirming yourself when the job is a second story. And the Houzz page, which carries the deepest review history, is marked "Business Profile Suspended". The written history has also gone quiet. The newest account anywhere is May 2023, and five of the fourteen are Angi reviews from January and February 2011, mostly about snow removal. For a kitchen, a bath or an addition around North Reading, the 2017–2023 accounts describe careful, code-conscious work from an owner who is on the job himself. Ask for current licence and registration numbers and check them against the state registry, tie the payment schedule to milestones in writing, and ask him directly about the 2018 dispute.
I was introduced to Paul by my design consultant at Frank Webb. I was interested in doing a complete bathroom renovation. Paul came promptly, offered me a fair quote & time frame. He is a true gentleman, very knowledgeable & professional, respectful & easy-going. He has been an absolute pleasure to work with. He & his subcontractors have done an amazing job & I am extremely happy with the finished result. Paul communicates regularly & is very responsive to any questions or concerns that may arise. The whole project went smoothly from start to finish. I would not hesitate to recommend Contemporary Contracting for any home remodeling project.
Contemporary Contracting converted our small Cape in North Reading into a beautiful Colonial. This was a large project that included adding a full second story, a finished attic, and a new attached garage. The work done was of very high quality, with a lot of attention to detail on the chimney, on the finish work, and in the new bathrooms. The electrical and plumbing work was also done meticulously with very high quality. I especially enjoyed working with Contemporary Contracting due to their flexibility when project decisions needed to be made. Finally, I greatly appreciated the frequency of communication with Contemporary Contracting during the project, and even when I had questions after the job was done. This focus on personal interaction is what sets them apart, and I found this to be particularly valuable for a project as large as a home renovation.
Had Contemporary Contracting build my house and the project went smoothly
I have had Paul perform various projects from small door replacements to full remodels at various home locations. He has always provided me with solid advice, quality workmanship and worked within agreed budgets and timelines. Most recently, he has assisted with a remodel of a rental property. As an owner, it is very crucial that the project be done as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality that will attract tenants. He more than delivered!
After 20 yrs living in a 175 yr old house we finally remodeled our kitchen using Contemporary Contracting. Paul and his associates did a great job. He listened to what we wanted and made it happen. He brought our kitchen up to code and made it beautiful. He brought in subs who went above and beyond the call of duty. We love our kitchen and feel we have really added value to our home.
