Cutting Edge Homes' record splits sharply in two: reviewers praising detailed, well-run renovations and custom builds run by owner Sean Cutting and his team, and reviewers describing unpaid subcontractors, liens placed on their own property, and renovations that stalled for months or years. The Ashland-based design-build firm takes on whole-home renovations, additions, and custom kitchens and baths across the Boston area, and Houzz credits it with 7 awards, including several CotY (Contractor of the Year) wins for kitchen, bath, addition and whole-home projects between 2015 and 2020, plus a Best of Boston 2020 listing. On the positive side, a 2026 review describes a Seaport condo renovation finished with clear communication and "detail-oriented" execution; 2025 reviews describe a Wellesley custom-built home the company still services years later, and a primary-bathroom renovation the homeowner called "incredible." In a 2023 review, a customer described a full rebuild of an Acton home completed on the agreed deadlines despite the homeowner's own mid-project design changes. The negative side is just as detailed and recurs across years and platforms: in reviews dated 2020, 2023, 2024 and 2025, separate customers describe the company failing to pay subcontractors — resulting in liens placed on their own properties in at least one case — alongside stalled work, unresponsiveness once problems arose, and budgets that grew far beyond what was quoted (a 2022 Houzz review put one jump at $400–450K to as much as $1,000,000). Its BBB profile carries a D grade with three complaints on file. Two accounts raise a further concern about the negative record itself: a 2022 Houzz review said the owner made unwanted contact pressuring the customer to change their review after the relationship ended, and a 2024 Google review's later edit states the company publicly suggested the review was written by someone else and called it "untruths." This is a company capable of real, well-reviewed work — but the same pattern of non-payment and budget overruns shows up too often and too recently to treat as isolated. Get everything in writing, confirm how subcontractor payments are handled and verified, and talk to recent references directly before signing.

I had the privilege of working with Sean and his team at Cutting Edge Homes. He genuinely cares about his employees and clients. It's rare to find a company that truly puts people first. If you want a dedicated and caring team, I highly recommend.
I recently completed a renovation with Cutting Edge on a condo in the Seaport. Working with Sean and his team was a truly positive experience. From start to finish, their team was professional, organized, and detail-oriented. They provided clear communication throughout the process, and always followed through on what they promised. The quality of the craftsmanship exceeded my expectations. We had a tight timeline and they made the process as smooth as possible by keeping the project on track and being proactive in addressing any questions or concerns along the way. The project turned out beautifully, and I could not be happier with the results. We would gladly recommend them to anyone considering a renovation.
I had a list of those little projects that never seem to get done, and Cutting Edge Homes home division took care of every single one quickly and with such great quality. Nicholas was professional, respectful, and I felt completely comfortable having him in my home. It was such a relief to finally check everything off my list! I can’t recommend them enough.
Cutting Edge Homes built our new home in Wellesley several years ago, and the experience was outstanding from start to finish. The project involved extensive permitting and neighborhood approvals, which their team managed with professionalism and persistence. Throughout construction, they kept a clear focus on quality, detail, and communication, and the finished home has exceeded our expectations. What makes them truly stand out is the ongoing relationship. Cutting Edge Homes continues to service and support our home to this day, which gives us tremendous peace of mind. Very few builders stand behind their work in this way. Substantial new constructions are stressful. I always appreciated that Sean would meet and communicate with us after hours to accommodate our schedule. When issues did arise, as is normal, I felt confident we could work through them together and find a solution. We would highly recommend Cutting Edge Homes to anyone considering a new build or major renovation. They combine excellent design, craftsmanship, and long-term support in a way that is rare in the industry.
I’ve had the opportunity to work with Sean and Josh on multiple projects, and they’ve consistently been professional, organized, and reliable. Communication is always clear, scheduling is well-coordinated, and the jobsites are run smoothly. They treat their subs with respect, which makes working together not only productive but enjoyable. I look forward to continuing to work with them and highly recommend them to anyone looking for a contractor who values quality and teamwork. Derek
