D.S. Roofing has been a one-owner shingle-and-repair outfit out of Westford since 1993 — Dennis Shurtleff still runs it himself with a small crew of three, taking on the residential roofing, gutter, and downspout work the Better Business Bureau lists for the company. The Bureau doesn't accredit the business but still grades it A+. Nearly every written review on file, dating from 2010 through a final one in 2018, describes the same thing: Dennis showing up when he said he would and doing the job cleanly. In a 2016 review, a homeowner described him arriving the same morning a snowstorm was about to hit to fix a missing ridge shingle that had been letting snow into the house, then reshingling a damaged section while he was there. Others, in 2015 and 2018 reviews, called his quotes competitive and his crew meticulous and professional. None of the 17 reviews on file fall below four stars. The written reviews stop in 2018, but permit filings tell a more current story — 193 roofing permits across Westford, Lowell, Methuen and several other towns, ten of them filed in just the last three years, almost all strip-and-reroof jobs. That points to a business still actively working, even without recent customer write-ups to show for it. Worth noting: Angi and HomeAdvisor both show a 4.9-star, 31-rating page for the company, but the two mirror the same review set rather than being two separate votes of confidence. One thing worth confirming before booking: a directory lists a bundle of six Massachusetts licenses tied to Dennis Shurtleff, including a construction supervisor specialty credential, but doesn't publish any license numbers — that's a directory claim rather than a verified registration, so it's worth asking to see current licensing and insurance directly. For a straightforward reroof or shingle repair from a small, long-running local operation, the history here — from a 2016 storm-day fix to a decade of on-time, professional jobs — points to a dependable one-man operation; just get the licensing confirmed given how old the written reviews are.
Dennis was a man of his word, he gave us a very competitive quote and indicated an honest timeline to begin the work if we decided to give him the job. His crew seemed to be very experienced and professional while they were performing their work at our home. They were meticulous in their attention to the detail of their work, and to our landscaping and plants, and cleaned up the entire area afterwards.
The process was clear and easy and the work was done within a couple of weeks.

Dennis came the morning I called him and fixed a missing Ridge shingle on my roof as a snowstorm was about to hit - preventing snow from entering what had been a huge how right into my house. He then proceeded to reshingle a good portion of the back of my house where we had had some problems with ice dams. Terrific guy, can't thank him enough for coming on such short notice. We'll definitely be having him back to do more when the snow melts.
Dennis was very busy with large projects but made the time to fit in my repairs. Showed up on time and did a great professional job at a great price. If we need to do a complete roofing job I will use him in the future.
