Downtown Abbeys LLC got its start, by owner Oliver Childs's own account, when he helped a neighbor update a bathroom — that project grew into a Newton-based remodeling business specializing in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. Both his Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration and his construction supervisor license are active and state-verified. Reviews describe the same experience across nearly a decade: a hands-on owner who shows up to design meetings, works out creative solutions for tricky layouts, and keeps to the schedule and estimate. In a 2021 review, a homeowner said a bathroom renovation — a full gut down to the studs, new plumbing and electrical, a custom shower — was managed closely and came in on budget. In a 2021 review about a basement finish, a customer described Oliver as incredibly responsive even as they changed some of the original plans mid-project. In a 2016 review, a client who'd completed around six projects with the company said every job stayed on target with deadlines and subcontractors. Older accounts describe similar work: a 2017 BuildZoom review said a gut remodel of a bathroom found a creative fix, fitting a pedestal sink against a brick wall, with no unexpected added costs; a 2016 review described Downtown Abbeys repainting a living room, kitchen, and dining room in a historic 1858 Charlestown home, then returning nine months later to remodel the kitchen. A 2017 feature on Boston Voyager described the company's focus as before-and-after transformations, in Oliver's words turning "a squat into a posh pad." The company carries an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and 11 years in business per that profile. Its written reviews run from 2016 to 2021, with nothing more recent on file. For a bathroom, kitchen, or basement remodel around Newton, this looks like an owner-operated shop with a well-documented run of projects — since the written reviews stop in 2021, it's worth asking for a couple of recent references to check current availability and pricing.

We asked Oliver to completely remodel our kitchen, we are so thankful that he was available for the job! The kitchen came out beautifully, I can’t believe it is the same space. From day one, Oliver was mindful of our budget, communicative/easy to reach, kept us up to speed with each step of the project, involved us in all decisions, and guided us when we didn’t know what to do. We also wanted to work with a co”
Downtown Abbeys remodeled our bathroom. I am so happy with the result - my husband and I keep joking that now we have to remodel the rest of the house so it will match how nice the bathroom looks! Oliver was super responsive, paid close attention to detail, and uses subcontractors that do the same. We had a great experience overall, and I would definitely work with Downtown Abbeys again for future projects.
Downtown Abbey’s finished our basement. The job included, concrete floor leveling, HVAC, tile work, dry wall, electrical, paint and trim. We are so happy with the work. Ollie was incredible responsive and was willing to work with us as we modified some original decisions. Anything we were unsatisfied with (small details) was rectified. Highly recommend.
Downtown Abbeys did an awesome job with a complete renovation of our bathroom, relocating laundry and reconfiguring the layout. Ollie and his crew kept to the schedule and estimate and were a goodvalue. His design eye, helped us finalize the layout and led to some creative solutions for tight spaces.
Ollie and his team at Downtown Abbey, LLC did an outstanding job re-finishing the basement of our Newton Center house, especially as it was a bit tricky being an old house with moisture in the basement (we use to continuously run a dehumidifier down there-but now we no longer need to do this)! Downtown Abbey, LLC stuck to their quote and their timeline while producing a high quality finished product. I would highly recommend them for any job!
Downtown Abbeys LLC renovated my bathroom. The project involved removal of an old tub, taking out drywall down to studs, updating plumbing, electrical, building out new shower with a sliding glass shower door, installing new vanity, and all fixtures needed. The company managed all aspects of the project, professionally, on time, within budget. What I most appreciate about working with Oliver Childs, the proprietor, is his honesty, patience, and offering recommendations along the way that improved the overall finished project. I would recommend Downtown Abbeys LLC without hesitation.
