Twelve Google ratings, every one of them five stars — and one paperwork problem a homeowner should sort out before anything else. DRM Solutions' Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, number 196081, is expired. The company works out of Methuen and says Dan Melo founded it in 2008, after he came up through the carpentry program at Greater Lawrence Technical School starting in 1996 and completed his Massachusetts building code education. It describes itself as a general contractor and construction manager doing residential and commercial renovations, additions, design-build work and property management across most of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and claims 18 years in business. Melo runs it as president; BBB lists six employees under his management. The reviews are few but consistent. Six written accounts spread across 2021 to 2025 describe whole-project work — a finished basement, a full master bathroom and closet renovation, structural work on a century-old house — and the same two themes keep surfacing: clear communication and clean job sites. Its BBB page carries an A+ with no complaints published. Houzz shows a single project and no reviews at all. Here is what to press on. An expired HIC registration matters in Massachusetts because registration is what gives a homeowner access to the state's Guaranty Fund on a residential job; ask directly whether it has been renewed and get the current number. The website also lists a Construction Supervisor License, CS-098969, and Houzz lists 098969 — neither of which we checked against the registry, so treat both as the company's own claim. Six reviews across five years is a thin history for a firm this old, so ask for references on a project close in size to yours. This is a plausible fit for a mid-to-large renovation where project management and scheduling matter more than a big review count — basement build-outs, additions, whole-room remodels. Confirm the registration status first, then the references.

What an adventure we had together with Dan and his crew. Making sure a 100+ year old home is structurally sound is no joke, but the DRM team made it as enjoyable as possible. Communication was excellent, options were clearly explained, and deadlines were hit. We would definitely work with them again!

We had our basement finished by DRM and could not be happier with the results. We chose DRM because from the outset (and to the finish) Dan is very communicative and professional. That isn’t something that always presents itself in the industry. The crew was also very professional and insightful. They were here every day, worked with purpose and scheduled the subcontractors with precision – and this resulted in the job being completed many weeks before the estimate. How often do you hear of that? The foreman, Pat, has a keen eye for design and is a finished carpenter by trade – so the results are absolutely stunning. They added a few built-ins that really made the space pop. It has been a few months since they finished and we just love our new space, it really expanded our home. In addition to all of these points, I would also like to say that DRM’s quote was substantially lower than some we received. When selecting a contractor, I know how important these reviews can be. Please let me assure you that if you choose DRM, you will not be disappointed. We look forward to working with them again in the future.

DRM did a full renovation of our master bathroom and closet and we’re thrilled with the results. Our experience with them was night and day from a previous contractor. Unlike our first home reno experience, Dan and team are professional, organized and great communicators. They use an app to streamline scheduling, communications and provide daily progress updates. The worksite was always left clean and they were great about adapting to changes and feedback as we went along. We’d definitely recommend them.
