Ninety-nine years in one trade, in one town. Frank H. Duffy, Inc. — everyone calls it Duffy Floors — has been sanding, staining, and laying wood floors out of 369 Salem Street in Medford since 1927, and the company says the same family is still running it, three generations deep, with Chris Potts as president. The bulk of the work is refinishing what's already there: old oak buried under carpet or tile, floors that haven't been touched in decades, parquet, Brazilian cherry that needs the red pulled out of it. They install too — traditional strip, plank, borders, feature strips, medallions and inlays — plus waxing, maintenance, and luxury vinyl. The company points to the Museum of Fine Arts, the Gardner Museum, Jordan Hall, MIT and Harvard as past customers. On Google the average sits at 4.8 across 34 ratings, and the through-line in what people write is process rather than flash: a detailed quote up front, a clear explanation of what will and won't be perfect afterward, and crews who tape off the house before the sanders come out. This past winter a homeowner had the team restore old hardwood and described being kept updated throughout at a price that matched the quote; another, writing this summer about a 1920s house, singled out the prompt appointment and the warning up front that baseboard paint might need touching up where tape had been. That habit of naming the annoyances in advance shows up again and again. The Better Business Bureau has them accredited since 2009 with an A+ grade, and its file on the company dates to 1927. The one dissent worth knowing about: among 22 reviews going back to 2021, a single sharply negative one disputes who actually does the work, alleging the crew on site was outsourced rather than in-house, and faults the finish quality on a roughly $3,500 job. Nothing like it appears in the recent stretch, but it's a fair thing to raise directly — ask who will be in your house, whether they're Duffy employees, and what the finish warranty covers. Worth noting too that the company does not install or service laminate flooring, so if that's your product, this isn't your contractor. If you have old wood floors that need bringing back — and especially if you want someone who will tell you the awkward parts before starting rather than after — Duffy is built for exactly that job. Get the written quote, confirm the crew, and pin down the schedule; reviewers say the estimates have held.

Two years ago, I had the original hardwood floors of my 1920-built home refinished by Duffy Floors. Chris arrived promptly for our scheduled appointment, gave a very reasonable quote, and clearly explained what to expect—including the possibility of needing to retouch baseboard paint if tape or sanders touched them. On the day of the work, Martin arrived right on time and meticulously blocked off all doors and windows to minimize dust. Since I couldn't walk on the floors due to the polyurethane, I stayed away for a few days. When I returned, I was absolutely stunned by how beautiful my floors looked and the amazing job Martin did. He was so precise that I had only minimal touch-ups to do on the baseboards. It has been two years since I had the floors done, and they still look beautiful. I recommend Duffy Floors without reservation for anyone needing their floors professionally done

We had an excellent experience with Duffy Floors. Chris Potts, the owner, and his team restored our old hardwood floors beautifully. They were clear about expectations, kept us updated throughout, and their pricing was fair. The carpenter went above and beyond, making seamless repairs. Highly recommend!

I used Duffy floors to finish my new kitchen white oak 4” plank floor and adjacent existing white oak 2 1/4” floor. President Chris Potts reviewed the proposed finishes and did a mockup for me to review. Their team did a fabulous job in matching the two rooms, with great workmanship, and excellent quality in a very professional manner. They met the schedule, and many have complimented the finish and quality by Duffy Floors. Chris and his team go over and beyond for good quality flooring. I highly recommend their company and team. As an architect I am very particular about quality work, and this company does superb work. Thank you Chris and team !!! Anne Tansantisuk AIA, NCARB, LEEDAP

We recently had damage done to our brand-new floors by a previous company who left behind paint marks and scratches—and then refused to fix it. Thankfully, Chris at Duffy Floors stepped in and completely turned the situation around. From start to finish, the team was incredibly kind, professional, and reassuring. They carefully removed all the paint and flawlessly repaired the scratches, leaving our floors looking truly brand new again. We’re so grateful for their help and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Duffy Floors to anyone needing flooring repairs or installation.

The Duffy Floors crew installed hardwood in our kitchen and primary bedroom and refinished two living rooms, a bedroom, our hallways, and stairs. Their attention to detail is second to none, and all of their work was immaculate and transformed our home. Chris is an exceptional communicator with an obvious knowledge and passion for what he does.
