In January 2025, when the rooftop unit at the Canton Community Kindergarten stopped igniting in a cold stretch, E.M. Duggan was out immediately; Joe the technician found the problem and drove to multiple stores looking for a spare part before the company ordered it and installed it. The kindergarten then signed a service agreement for all its HVAC needs. E.M. Duggan is a Canton, Massachusetts mechanical contractor that says it has been in business since 1891 and describes its work as plumbing, HVAC, fire protection and electrical for projects across New England. ENR New England named it 2022 Specialty Contractor of the Year, and ENR wrote in July 2022 that it is a fifth-generation, family-run mechanical contractor. In a January 2023 review, a customer whose ductless system was blowing only cold air wrote that Chris diagnosed a thermostat output problem, installed the customer's new smart thermostat and explained the system, after a cheaper company had said the whole unit needed replacing; that customer called Duggan "Not cheap but definitely pros." In September 2025 a customer wrote that a mini split ordered in March 2025 was installed in one day three weeks later by a crew that was respectful of the house and yard. In November 2025 a one-star reviewer wrote that Duggan insisted on a complete diagnostic of a fairly new HVAC system, had the customer pay a contractor to open a ceiling and dismantle a bathroom exhaust vent, and then said a new thermostat was all that was needed. In December 2024 a one-star reviewer wrote of a $230 tune-up, $800 more for refrigerant, and then advice to replace the whole system. In November 2023 a one-star reviewer cited $600 just to check if a heater was broken and get a quote. In April 2023 a reviewer described a non-refundable pre-paid two-hour appointment that ended without a diagnosis, and nearly $1,000 asked up front for a return visit. In June 2022 a reviewer wrote that a Thanksgiving 2021 emergency HVAC call carried a $915 minimum, the plumber left after five minutes, and the customer later received a debt collection letter. In August 2025 a one-star reviewer wrote that sprinkler work left multiple active leaks and water damage in their building, and that the company asked $1,700 to come that day or $911 just to show up four days later, with no guarantee of a fix. A 2024 Reddit commenter in r/boston noted it is a union shop, "so expect it to be expensive." Its BBB grade is A+, and the state registry shows plumber license 63-PL-C in its name as expired.
