E.M. Duggan has been piping Boston-area buildings since 1891 — five generations of one family, by the company's own telling, working out of Canton under a name that now covers plumbing, HVAC, fire protection and mechanical service. ENR named it New England's Specialty Contractor of the Year in 2022. Most of what customers write is about the commercial and institutional side. A Dorchester facility's fire protection system, a glycol chiller sorted in one visit, a decade-long relationship a construction-company owner described in a 2025 review — that is the shape of the praise. The residential work shows up too, and at its best it is specific: a homeowner writing in September 2025 ordered a mini split in March, had it installed in a single day three weeks later, and ran it through the summer without trouble. In January 2025, the Canton Community Kindergarten's rooftop heater quit during a cold snap and a technician drove between stores hunting a spare part before ordering one. Then there is the other half of the page, and it is consistent enough to plan around. The complaints are almost never about craft — they are about what it costs to get someone to look at your problem. A December 2024 caller took a $230 tune-up, was moved on to roughly $800 of further diagnosis, then was quoted a leak test at $180 an hour or a whole new system. A 2023 reviewer paid $600 just to have a heater checked and quoted. Another in 2023 describes a non-refundable prepaid two-hour appointment that ended without a diagnosis, followed by an offer to book a second one. In November 2025, a homeowner who asked for a thermostat swap says they were told to hire someone to open a bathroom ceiling for a full diagnostic — and the answer turned out to be the thermostat. The heaviest complaint is newer: two reviews from August 2025 describe sprinkler work that left multiple active leaks and thousands of dollars of water damage, with $911 quoted simply to come back and look. Its Massachusetts plumbing license, 63-PL-C, sits on the state registry as expired — worth raising directly before any plumbing work. Duggan is the sensible call for a facility, a building system, or a planned mechanical install where scale and a long bench matter. For a one-off residential service call, pin down the diagnostic fee, the minimum hours, and what happens if the visit does not solve it before anyone rolls a truck.
