Every written account of Eastern Construction on file was posted between 2008 and 2015: sixty-six Angi ratings averaging 4.5, and a paper trail that stops a decade ago. The Saugus company lists three other trading names — A A & K Construction Inc, AA&K Construction Inc and Eastern Roofing — claims sixty-four years of experience with ten employees, and a 2009 reviewer named the owner as Steve Kalman, calling him a fourth-generation craftsman. The work runs wide: roofing and ice-dam clearing, kitchens and bathrooms, dormers, siding, gutters, porches and decks. In that 2009 review a homeowner put a kitchen renovation, a new floor, a new roof and exterior painting on one contract, and singled out the granite installer and the crew keeping the kitchen usable through the job. Reviewers writing in the ice-dam winters of 2011 keep saying the same thing — they showed up the day after the call, when other firms didn't. The complaints from that same stretch are specific and worth reading. A 2011 customer said a rotted door threshold, frame and the studs behind it were agreed and then not properly replaced, that a third callback never came, and that a shed roof had bowed a year on; the owner replied that the extra stud was replaced at no charge and the shed roof inspected. A 2010 customer described a leak behind a shower wall that survived two return visits before the owner intervened after the review and sent a plumber who fixed it. Another 2010 roofing customer stood over a young roofer with a shop-vac to get construction rubble out of new soffit vents before plywood went over them. The useful question here is what the company looks like now — the accounts describe a crew and a project manager from more than ten years ago. Ask who runs the job today, which of the four trading names goes on your contract, and get the punch list written down: the thread running through the complaints is finishing work that only happened when a customer listed it.
I was satisfied. I thought they did a great job. They definitely cleaned up after themselves and gave us heads up when they were going through each room. The project manager was very helpful. He took care of whatever complaints or things that needed to be addressed. He made sure it was done.
They showed up promptly and on schedule. The work was professionally done and I am happy with the results. There were a few communication gaps regarding the scope of the project, but they were worked out. Overall I am please with this company.
Have recommended them repeatedly. Estimates usually on the low side...but there are always changes as work progresses, so that is to be expected. Very helpful, picked things i had ordered up. Reliable and trustworthy.
It went very well. They did what they said and everything was fine. They were neat and clean. I would highly recommend them
Steve is extremely courteous and was responsive and willing. However, the quality of the work just didn't do. The window sill replacement looks fine, although we agreed to composite instead of wood and it looks like wood to me. I can't verify that so I'm letting it be. The shed roof seemed fine, but now a year later it is bowed...so clearly either moisture is getting in, or there is a weight issue. The shed had a lot of rot, according to his photos, and the price went up accordingly. He was fair with pricing: no problem there. But I don't know whether the quality of the roofing work is going to hold over the years. The exterior door threshold had moderate rot and we agreed he would replace it: threshold, door frame and the studs behind the door frame. His boys simply didn't do what we agreed to. A second visit, and a little more was done, but still not satisfactorily. The third call was made (I'm often out of the country and so can't always see results right away)...they never actually came. We had totally dropped it, because asking someone to return over and over is not worth the trouble. To his credit, he found the undone job a year later, and called saying he will come by to rectify it. I hope he does, because there is still rot by the door. I've never used him before, and certainly won't again. I can't say if this is an aberration or not. He is courteous and professional, even solicitous, but the work quality is just not satisfactory.
