Highlights
- Deep permit history — 55 permitted projects across Greater Boston towns
- Flat and pitched roofs — strip-and-reroof plus rubber roofing jobs on file
- Beyond roofing — permits cover bathrooms, siding, porches and basements
- Licences on record — BuildZoom lists HIC and construction supervisor numbers
- One customer review — a single five-star account dated November 2014
- Review is off-trade — that lone account describes a kitchen, not a roof
- Score is permit-based — BuildZoom's 91 reflects permits, not customer sentiment
- Licence records muddled — same digits filed twice as cancelled Newton registrations
Evans Bros Roofing has been pulling permits around Greater Boston for well over a decade — 55 projects on file — and the roofing half of that is what the name promises: strip-and-reroof jobs and rubber roofs in Somerville, Milton, Everett, Brookline and Jamaica Plain, with a 2019 Dunkin Donuts re-roof in Brookline as the one commercial job among otherwise residential work. The other half is where a homeowner should pay attention. The permits filed by owner Scott Evans also cover first- and second-floor bathroom remodels in Newton Center, Somerville and West Newton, a Somerville kitchen rehab in 2012, cedar siding and trim repair in Chestnut Hill, a front porch rebuilt with Trex treads, basement demolition, and a fire-escape repair in Everett. This is a remodeling outfit that roofs, not a roofing-only crew — which also means the Massachusetts registration exemption for roofing-only contractors does not apply to them. What is thin is what customers say. One review exists: a five-star note from November 2014, and even that one describes a whole-house renovation with a kitchen "right out of a magazine" rather than a roof. BuildZoom's score of 91 is computed from permit volume, not from sentiment, so it should not be read as a decade of happy customers. The licence bundle needs care too, because all of it is BuildZoom's own bookkeeping rather than a state registry check. BuildZoom lists a home improvement contractor registration (#136930) and a construction supervisor licence (CS-103661), which is the normal pair for a Massachusetts contractor. It then lists the same digits, 103661, twice more as City of Newton registrations under two different types, both inactive and at one point cancelled. For a re-roof or a bathroom in Medford, Somerville or Newton, the permit trail is real and long. Go in knowing there is almost no published customer record behind it: ask for recent references, and confirm the licence numbers with the state before signing.

What does a roof replacement cost in Greater Boston?
Typical Greater Boston range for this kind of work, from regional averages — not a quote from Evans Bros Roofing. Use it to sanity-check bids, then get the real number in writing.
A square is 100 sq ft of roof surface — bigger than the floor plan because of pitch and overhangs.
Estimated range
$9,000 – $18,600
Typical roofing project around $13,800
