Roth Design Remodeling has run out of 12 Murphy Drive in Nashua since 1986, has been BBB accredited since 1988 — two years before most of its competitors existed — and holds an A+ there. Gerald Roth is president; Dean Rascoe runs sales. This is a design-build firm at the expensive end of the market, not a handyman outfit. It publishes its own price bands: bathrooms from $25,000 to $80,000, kitchens $50,000 to $120,000, basements starting at $50,000, additions starting at $100,000, with a typical project anywhere from $25,000 to $750,000. There is a 6,000 square foot showroom, computer-generated drawings before the build, a ten-step process and a three-year warranty. Seventy-seven projects are published on Houzz and 36 permitted jobs show in the building records, running to $214,000 apiece. The licences are unusually well corroborated. BBB, BuildZoom and Houzz independently name the same two Massachusetts numbers for this company — a construction supervisor licence and a home improvement contractor registration — and BuildZoom lists both as active. Three separate directories agreeing on the same numbers at the same address is a stronger signal than any one of them alone, though none is a state confirmation, so check them yourself before signing. Here is the honest gap. For a firm this established, there is almost nothing to read from actual customers. Houzz shows a 5.0 across 21 ratings without publishing the comments; Angi and HomeAdvisor are the same listing twice, and between them hold a single review from 2016. BuildZoom has none. A 5.0 with no readable accounts behind it is not the same as a 5.0 you can check, and the one written account on file is a decade old. The awards — six NHHBA People's Choice wins, Cornerstone awards across a decade, Guild Master through 2019 — are real and repeated, but they are industry awards, not customers talking. One concrete thing to raise on the call: BuildZoom lists two EPA lead-safe renovation certifications for the company and both are marked inactive, previously cancelled. If your house predates 1978, that certification is a legal requirement for disturbing painted surfaces, so ask for current EPA RRP documentation in writing before work starts. Ask also for a handful of references from the past year, and confirm both Massachusetts licence numbers with the Department of Public Safety and the Office of Consumer Affairs directly.
