Thirty-eight building permits in Worcester, most of them single- and two-family houses raised between 2005 and 2011 — that is the shape of Goldstar Builders. The company works out of 75 Webster St, and its BBB page says it started in 2004 under owner/operator Tony Nguyen, with a second Worcester address on file. That same page lists kitchen and bath remodeling, renovations and additions alongside the new-build work. The thing worth knowing first is who has been writing lately, and it is the unhappy customers. Four one-star Google reviews landed in June 2026, one from someone who wrote that they 'moved into a place Tony did work on & a year later, it's all falling apart.' Google's average still sits at 4.2 across 33 ratings, so the stars and the written comments point in opposite directions. The most detailed account is older but specific. In a January 2022 review, a buyer of a house the company built described bathroom floors crumbling within months from what they called cheap caulking and technique, bathroom walls cracking, and large yellow stains spreading across a living-room ceiling — and said that when they invoked the one-year warranty, they got rudeness and promises that went nowhere. Another reviewer that same month described delay after delay and excuses for problems they felt were avoidable. The praise is real but thinner and further back. A September 2021 reviewer called the houses reasonable and affordable and the transaction a pleasure; a 2022 commenter said the owner knows his stuff; and on BuildZoom, a buyer wrote at the end of 2020 that the home Goldstar built was their first and they had never regretted it. Licensing is the one thing to pin down yourself, because the two directories disagree. BBB lists a home improvement contractor registration (175046) with the Office of Consumer Affairs and a construction supervisor licence (CS-027219) with the Department of Public Safety; BuildZoom's profile says the reverse — that as of an October 2018 check, no licence was required for the company to build in Massachusetts. Both are directory listings rather than anything confirmed at the registry, and general contracting is not one of the narrow specialties Massachusetts exempts from registration. BBB itself publishes no rating for the business, saying it lacks enough information, and the company is not accredited there. This is a builder more than a remodeler — the permit history is houses, not kitchens. If you are buying one of its homes or hiring it for a build, the questions that matter are what the warranty covers, who picks up the phone when something fails after move-in, and what the current registration and supervisor licence numbers are. Get all three in writing, and check the numbers against the state yourself.
