Guthrie Construction is a Dorchester-based general contractor run by Joe Guthrie, a hands-on owner who homeowners across Boston hired between 2011 and 2019 for kitchen and bath renovations, porches and stairs, closets, roofing and full-house rehabs. Angi and HomeAdvisor list carpentry, remodeling, roofing, siding, decks, porches and additions, and the company describes itself as fully licensed and insured in Massachusetts and a 2016 Super Service Award winner, though no license number or BBB file is given. Both platforms show a 4.6-star average across 24 ratings, 88% five stars. The written accounts are dated but detailed, and most name the price. In February 2018, an owner of an old multi-unit house described a $160,000 renovation and called Joe honest, reliable and attentive to detail, keeping them informed at every stage. A July 2019 reviewer paid $28,000 for a job where Joe was on site every day and the plumber, electrician, tiler and plasterer were all excellent, finishing in about six weeks. A January 2019 customer had a $15,000 kitchen refresh: bar lowered to counter height, cabinets professionally painted white, new countertop, dishwasher, lighting and backsplash. In summer 2017 another homeowner spent $17,000 on a new front staircase, a rear landing and stairs, a rebuilt deck over the porch, gutters and fascia. Smaller jobs include a walk-in closet built from knocked-down walls (December 2018) and a roof started within two days and finished in three (2016). What reviewers credit most is responsiveness and budget discipline. A December 2015 customer, worn down by an insurance company and unresponsive contractors, said Joe answered every call and question promptly. Others from 2015 and 2016 say he came within days to quote, worked with them on price to meet a budget, stayed within it and did much of the work himself. A September 2011 reviewer noted that when extra work surfaced mid-job he handled it straightforwardly. The exception is a February 2018 two-star review of a $22,000 project: the homeowner asked Joe to leave nine weeks into a job promised at six, saying costs kept climbing as items they believed were included turned out not to be, and that he asked for more money before the contract was fulfilled. Angi also notes a three-star and a one-star rating whose text was not retrievable. The company's own listing gives its experience as both 20-plus and 30 years. For a Boston homeowner planning a renovation with several trades, the eight years of reviews describe a responsive, detail-minded contractor. Because the record ends in 2019, ask what he has completed recently, ask for a license number to check with the state, and put every inclusion, the schedule and the change-order process in the contract.
The project went extremely smoothly from beginning to end and we are very pleased with the results. Joe is the owner and he was very responsive throughout the entire project. He explained his choice of materials and kept us up to date on when he could begin the work and the job was completed on time. Joe is a great guy and very easy to work with. We plan to use him for other projects we need done as well. We highly recommend him!
$28,000. All in all, it went very well. Joe was responsive in all cases. Once he began the job, he was there every day, making progress. Subcontractors--plumber, electrician, tiler, plasterer--were also excellent. Except for finishing touches, the work took about 6 weeks, which met our expectations. The finished bathroom is fabulous. My one criticism is that Joe is not very tidy. (I was spoiled by a previous contractor, no longer doing this work, who was extremely neat!) All in all, a good job and I would definitely hire him again.

I hired Joe to do a small renovation of my kitchen which included: lowering kitchen bar to counter height, professionally paint all cabinets in white, remove old countertop and install new one, install new dishwasher, change light fixtures, add a backsplash. Joe did an amazing job in renovating my kitchen. The people he works with are very professional. I really appreciated the communication from Joe always giving me a status every day per my request. Him and his team covered the floor and cleaned after themselves every day. He discussed with me the finish that I wanted and would not hesitate to call his guys back if it wasn't up to my satisfaction. When I had issues with my new dishwasher ordered from GE and they agreed to deliver a new one but wouldn't install it, Joe was kind enough to come back even though the rest of the job was done to do what GE should have done. I would definitely recommend hiring Joe as your contractor.
Joseph built a brand new walk-in closet for me and did a fantastic job. The job involved knocking down walls, closing off existing doors, building the closet and shelving, and painting. He was careful to make sure he understood exactly what I was looking for in the closet layout and I am so happy with the result! I would absolutely hire Joseph for another job. Joe did an excellent job and the work was pretty neat, always looking for the best finish. The budget went up a little bit but it was close to the starting one and the price was very reasonable for the work. Good at listening and always trying to please the customer.
