For 10 years, one homeowner's central air shut down in extreme heat, and several HVAC companies had come out without finding why. A recent customer said Garret listened to the description, went straight to the attic instead of the outside unit, and found the blower was wired wrong; that customer's AC then ran through the hot summer of 2026. The same customer wrote that the company president, John, said a new boiler would be wasting money because the old cast-iron one was in good working order. The company describes itself on its website as offering residential and commercial HVAC services and says it has been in business 64 years. A recent customer said John took time to explain things and offer options, and later added that they came out on short notice during a heat wave. In a 2026 review, a customer said Chris and the team had serviced their boiler and A/C for many years and had installed the A/C. A 2025 customer said Shane and Jim arrived on time to install a hot water heater and explained what they were going to do. A 2025 reviewer wrote that John walked them through switching to electric and had an A.O. Smith heat pump water heater installed. A 2024 customer said that when their furnace broke and parts were needed, Kevin dropped off space heaters early on a Saturday. A 2023 customer described a switch from oil to gas that included removing an in-ground tank and replacing two boilers with combi gas/hot water units. A 2022 customer said the company did a whole-home central air install and moved furniture to fit everything in. A recent customer who had central heating and air installed gave three stars, saying the system can't keep up in the summer and that the salesperson, John, was sometimes difficult to reach and acted secretive when asked for a cost breakdown after paying in full. That customer also said the installation took the two weeks promised and that the company fixed the cooling problem under warranty the year before. A 2024 reviewer gave one star and told others to take their money elsewhere. A 2021 customer said an estimate appointment was rescheduled, then canceled the morning of, and that the company later said it doesn't work in their town. In an August 2026 Reddit thread in r/connecticut, a poster suggested checking with "H Hulse inc out of Stratford."
“Check with another private company like H Hulse inc out of Stratford.”

Very knowledgeable, honest, and family-owned and operated. I switched to H. Hulse after my previous HVAC company kept raising prices, and I’m very glad I did. I’ve had them out three times, and each time they were great. Their prices are also much more reasonable than their competition. (I’ve used four different HVAC companies over the past nine years.) I had the elder John (the company president) out to quote a new boiler, and he very honestly told me I’d be wasting my money - it’s old, but it's cast iron and in good working order. John's son (also named John) just left after fixing my central A/C compressor. He diagnosed and repaired it quickly, and the price was great. (Mouse chewed wires.) Making appointments is easy, and the receptionist is friendly and easy going. Highly recommend! Update: They figured out why my central air would shut down during extreme temps. It's done that since I bought the house 10 years ago, and I have used several HVAC companies over the year. Each time it'd happen I'd pay for someone to come out only to say nothing was wrong, or to throw new capacitors at it, etc. Garret actually listened carefully to the scenario under which this would happen, and went straight up to the attic, not the outside unit like every other company. "Sounds like thermal shutdown." He wasn't up there long. "The blower was wired wrong." Well, summer 2026 was brutally hot and my AC worked flawlessly. I was ready to invest in a whole new system! (The owner, John, talked me out of that, too. Very honest! He could have gotten me for a new spoiler and a new AC!)
great initial experience. john took time to explain things, offer options, and didnt even want to charge for possibly fixing my issue. other places will take advantage. i hope that when i call them in the future that i continue to get this professional and honest experience! Edit: great second experience with Chris. Honest. Reasonable. Edit2: great third experience. Edit3: great fourth experience, they came out short notice, during heat wave, to help. The tech John was beyond nice.
I have had central heating and air installed in my house by Hulse for almost two years. Overall, I would recommend the company. One thing that brought the score down to a 3 is John, the salesperson we had. He was sometimes difficult to get a hold of during the initial service talks and once the service was started. And after the work was complete and I had paid in full, I requested a breakdown of costs so I could understand unit cost and replacement cost for the future. He acted very strange and secretive, like he ripped me off and didn’t want me to find out. The other frustrating thing is the system can’t keep up in the summer. I’m from Georgia where the summers are worse for longer and I never had an issue with my 20+ year old system keeping up. They did come by last year and fix it under warranty work. Now that it’s happening again, I suppose I’m just going to live with it for a while. Now the good things that make me recommend the company are the good staff. They said the installation would take two weeks, and unlike most people, they followed through with that. Each week there was a different foreman. Garrett kicked the project off and was great with communication. He helped me map out where vents would be and explained many general principles that were important to know. Andy finished the project up. The supporting crew was phenomenal as well. When I’ve had an issue, Chris Jr. has been great. Sometimes they send another guy out who is a bum. When I get Chris, he leaves with everything working right and explains what the issues were and how they got remedied.
Chris and the team have been servicing my boiler and A/C for many years - they even installed the A/C. They are reliable, efficient and super friendly. And when an urgent matter arises, like it did today, they are there for you to get the issue sorted. Cannot recommend them highly enough.
This is the second time I have called Hulse for an immediate need! They are very responsive, the technician was professional and friendly, and the work was done in a timely manner at a reasonable price! I will use them for all my future needs. I highly recommend them!
