Hashem is a North Reading family firm that has been around long enough for the paperwork to disagree about how long. BBB dates the business to 1988 under owner Jack Hashem and files it — along with its alternate name, Hashem Realty — under Real Estate. Porch says 56 years in business. Houzz says three generations, doing design/build, additions, kitchens, baths and new construction. BuildZoom carries the same phone number at a North Andover address under John Hashem Jr. The permitted work spans a wide range: six projects on record from 2008 to 2025, from a $614,000 commercial tenant fit-up in Methuen down to four weather-damaged windows replaced in Marshfield for $1,200. The customer record is thin, and it is not flattering. Porch shows a 3.0 average from two ratings, and the one account with text, posted in April 2018, describes a bathroom shower renovation quoted at a week and a half to two weeks that was still unfinished at nine weeks — repeated missed days, crews arriving and leaving after 30 minutes, and a homeowner who ended up repainting the ceiling themselves. BBB's B- comes with its own stated reason: the business did not respond to a complaint filed against it. BuildZoom lists an active Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration for the company, alongside a second HIC number it marks inactive. Those are the directory's records rather than confirmations, so check the numbers with the state yourself. If you are considering them, schedule and supervision are what to pin down: get the timeline in writing with dated milestones, ask who the on-site lead is day to day, and hold payment against completed stages.
“Began in family business and assumed ownership approx. 1984.”
Easily the most frustrating construction project I've ever had. I was told that my renovation of a bathroom shower would take 1.5-2 weeks.....we are going on 9 weeks and it still isn't done. Time and time again I was promised it would be done by XYZ day and time. Time and time again no one showed up, or would show up and work for 30 minutes and leave without finishing. It got to the point where I re-painted the entire ceiling myself, because I was so frustrated with the lack of progress. Unless you want to be the project manager (and set yourself up for disappointment), I would not recommended moving forward with Hashem.
