Hugh's Energy Conservation is a family-owned insulation and air-sealing outfit working out of Dedham, tackling the unglamorous work that actually cuts a heating bill: blown-in cellulose in an attic, batt insulation folded into a kitchen renovation, sealing up an old cape's basement. BuildZoom counts 98 building permits pulled under the company's name, and it's listed as a Mass Save partner and an approved insulation contractor in the major utilities' energy-saving programs. On HomeAdvisor, where it carries 90 ratings averaging 4.7 stars, the specific accounts read the same way. In 2021 a homeowner credited owner Tom Dromgoole with a hands-on site visit and a crew that showed up knowledgeable and left things clean. In 2020 another customer called two separate jobs — an attic and a kitchen renovation — prompt, reasonably priced, and tidy about the mess cellulose work usually leaves behind. Sources agree the business is genuinely family-run, though they don't agree on for how long: HomeAdvisor puts it at 51 years, Angi says 46, and BuildZoom's own blurb rounds it to "a quarter century." Two older HomeAdvisor reviews are worth weighing before booking. In 2018, a homeowner said the crew scratched newly refinished wood floors during a Mass Save-referred job and struggled for months to get reimbursed. In 2015, another customer described a scheduling dispute that escalated into the owner repeatedly changing confirmed dates and yelling on the phone. Separately, BuildZoom lists the company's Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #104800, as expired since mid-2016 and still inactive as of a January 2025 check — that's BuildZoom's own directory record, not an independent verification, so it's worth asking about directly. For a straightforward insulation or air-sealing job, especially one routed through a Mass Save audit, the recent reviews point to a responsive, careful crew; just confirm current licensing and pin down dates in writing given the two older disputes on file.
Hugh's Energy is a quality company and it starts at the top with owner-President, Tom Dromgoole. Tom made a site visit to my home to discuss details of the insulation including the process, timing, and outcomes; he answered all of my questions. He also came the day of the insulation to check on how things were going. His crew, led by Parris, was excellent - knowledgeable, efficient and clean. If you are considering insulating your home, just call this company and save yourself time.
Hugh's was a real pleasure to work with. The work was done well and fast, and they continued to be available for questions we had even after the work was done. I would hire them again.
Hugh's Energy has done two jobs at my house, one for the attic and the other for a kitchen renovation, both using blown-in cellulose. They're prompt, responsive, do quality work, and are reasonably priced. They also cleaned up very well, which matters because cellulose installation is very messy. Very happy with their work, and they work with MA Save.
the insulation work was done in our third floor through Mass Save. i hope it was done well, but no way to tell since it is all hidden in the walls ; ) however, the guys scratched our newly-refinished wood floors during the job which was in march 2018 and i am still trying to get the owner to reimburse us for the damage (now it's mid-august). they are insured; all they have to do is make a claim with their insurance...i am very unhappy. i just want this to be resolved, and i have not heard from the owner since june.
I could not be more disappointed with Hugh's Energy and I would STRONGLY advise anyone looking for insulation services to LOOK ELSEWHERE. I participated in the Mass Save program to get insulation for my house built in 1953 (before insulation was really part of the norm). I needed insulation in the eaves and attic of my cape style home, as well as blown insulation throughout the house. I called Hugh's Energy because their Dedham location is mere minutes from my house. And to their credit, the owner Tom came out quickly to confirm that they could do the job in 2 days. However, scheduling the actual work was a whole other story. Nearly a week after Mass Save approved the job, Hugh's still hadn't accepted the contract. I finally got a manager, Shawn, who scheduled the job for 3 days. The crew showed up late on day one, and on days two and three the owner Tom repeatedly changed the schedule, yelled at me on the phone, and accused me of lying about confirmed dates. I also noticed a crack in my wall from the blown insulation that took several days to fix, though the crew member Adam did a good job fixing it. The work was generally done well but the crew left insulation all over my house and even a bag of blown insulation remains on my front lawn. The communication with the owner Tom was probably the worst customer service I have ever experienced. STAY AWAY.
