John and Linda White have run this family handyman and design-build shop out of Marblehead since 2016, after both had prior full careers in construction before starting the company. They work North Shore towns from Lynn to Ipswich, focused on finish carpentry, small remodels, painting, and general repairs. The written reviews are few — three on Google since 2023 — but consistent. A 2023 review credits them with tearing up and replacing subfloor after a leaking toilet went undiscovered underneath it; a second 2023 review lists a run of separate jobs — a bathroom ceiling, a leaky window seal, gutter covers, basement trim — finished with cleanup included each time. A June 2026 reviewer adds that John and Linda stuck to the timelines they quoted and fixed several small issues on the spot during the initial walkthrough at no charge. Houzz separately shows a 5.0-star average across 26 ratings and three project awards, though the individual review text there wasn't available to check. Houzz lists a Massachusetts construction supervisor license (CS-111061) and a home improvement contractor registration for the company, along with lead-safe renovation and insurance claims — none verified here against the state registry, so it's worth confirming the license number directly before signing anything. For carpentry, small-remodel, and repair work on the North Shore, the available reviews all point the same direction: punctual, communicative, and willing to fix small things without a separate charge.
Typical Greater Boston range for this kind of work, from regional averages — not a quote from J. White Handyman Design & Construction. Use it to sanity-check bids, then get the real number in writing.
A day rate replaces the task list — usually the better deal once the list gets long.

I cannot recommend J. White enough. From the very beginning, John and Linda were professional, honest, and incredibly easy to work with. They gave realistic timelines and actually stuck to them, which is far too rare and so appreciated. During our initial walkthrough, they took the time to fix multiple small issues on the spot at no charge, which showed that they genuinely care about their customers (and potential customers!). Their pricing is honest, fair, and reasonable, and they were flexible with scheduling as well. Most importantly, the quality of John’s work is impeccable. Every project was completed with exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship. Beyond their excellent work, they are simply kind people. They were wonderful with my puppy, who was very interested in being part of everything! Five stars without hesitation. If you’re looking for trustworthy, high-quality work from genuinely good people, J. White is the one to call.
John and Linda are the absolute best, after a disaster was found under a leaking toilet, they came out and fixed us right up. From replacing the toilet, ripping up sub floor and laying a new to Linda's final touches they are amazing to work with!
John and Linda are the ultimate professionals and master of their crafts. We hired them to replace a bathroom ceiling, seal up a leaky window, put in gutter covers, and fix some trim/seal around a basement door. Every job was done superbly and included clean-up. They show up when they say they will and finish when they said they would. On top of it, they couldn’t be more pleasant! We highly recommend J. White.
