JB Sash & Door has sold and installed windows and doors out of Chelsea since the 1940s, when it started as a custom millwork shop nicknamed the "Home of the Window Boys." The company says it's now run by the Bertolami family, a multi-generation operation that calls itself New England's leading Marvin distributor, working the greater Boston area out of its Chelsea showroom. The rating holds up wherever you look for it: Google has the company at 3.7 stars from 78 ratings, Porch puts it at 3.6 from 130 reviews, and Mass Home Comfort lists the same 3.7. That kind of agreement across unrelated directories is a good sign the number is real rather than a fluke of one platform's algorithm. The two most recent reviews tell different stories. In February, a customer working with a staffer named Ed described a door warranty problem that got resolved without much back-and-forth. In April, another customer described a Back Bay condominium job that stalled: the technician sent to measure a replacement window called in sick, nobody rescheduled for six weeks until the customer called to ask, and — even after the Back Bay Architectural Commission approved the window design — the reviewer says nothing further had happened months later. Given that recent complaint, it's worth asking who at the company owns a project's follow-through once the initial estimate and city approvals are behind it — the actual measuring, scheduling, and circling back seem to be where coordination can slip. For a standard Marvin window or door purchase with an install date already on the books, the history here is long and the ratings are consistent across several independent sites. For anything that needs multiple visits or approvals strung together, get a specific timeline in writing before signing.

They sent someone to measure for a window replacement in My Back Bay condominium. On the day of, the person became sick and was unable to make it. And I forgot about it. 6 weeks later, I had to call JB Sash and ask them if they were ever going to send someone else to measure the window. Finally, they did. They gave me the drawings and proposal and I had to go to the back Bay Architectural Commission on my own; they didn't even offer to join me to be able to answer questions if the commission had any. Great news, the commission approved the window. It's been a few months now, and JB Sash has not even reached out to find out about the commission's ruling. I've now engaged another provider who is actively involved with dealing with the architectural commission and pulling permits. I don't know what this company is doing all day long, but it seems like they're not doing anything for their customers.

I have used JB Sash, working with Ed, for our renovation windows and doors. It all went smoothly. And when there was a recent warranty issue with a door, Ed was fantastic in helping me get it resolved. Thank you!

Very happy with the experience if the team that installed my new windows. They arrived on time when they said they would, kept me informed all along the way during the installation and made sure the place was clean after each install.
