Two numbers frame J.Griffin Heating & Plumbing: 245 ratings averaging 4.9, and a service list that barely strays from one thing — heat. Boilers, water heaters, gas lines, oil-to-gas conversions. This is a heating shop that also plumbs, not a plumber who occasionally meets a boiler. It works out of North Reading, which is worth knowing if you found it under Methuen — that's where a share of its permits land, not where it's based. The company says it has been in the family since 1981 and that the owner's two sons work alongside him, both listed as apprentice plumbers. Its own listings call it a Navien Service Specialist, and the equipment that recurs through its project albums — Navien combis, Weil-McLain boilers — matches that. The reputation is deep but narrower than it looks. Angi and HomeAdvisor each show 4.9 from 245 ratings, but the two pages are byte-identical: same star bar, same reviews, same order. That is one platform's read, not two independent ones. Across all sources the written history runs from 2015 to 2025, 27 distinct accounts, and the star bar is not unanimous — 1% of those 245 ratings are one-star, and the owner has answered criticism publicly on the page rather than leaving it to stand alone. Two things to pin down before calling. Tenure first: the same listing says 'over 30 years of heating and plumbing experience' in its About text and '45 years of experience' in its highlights, while the company's own blurb elsewhere points back to 1981 — a spread wide enough to be worth asking about directly. Then licensing. Every licence number attached to this business comes from a directory rather than the state. BuildZoom lists a journeyman plumber registration; Angi self-reports a different trade licence number, which is the normal shape when a company licence and an individual's licence both exist. BuildZoom also attaches an inactive architect registration that has nothing to do with this trade and may well belong to a different Jeffrey P. Griffin — don't read that as a lapsed credential of this business. If you're replacing a boiler or coming off oil, this is squarely the kind of shop that does that work week in and week out. Ask for the current plumbing licence number and check it yourself on the state's site, and get the scope, the rebate handling and the price in writing before the truck rolls.
