Joseph McWhinnie runs McWhinnie Custom Builders out of Medway, and the pattern in what people hire him for is clear: decks and porches. Across several review platforms, the recurring job is a deck rebuild, a screened-in porch, or a three-season room — the kind of project where he shows up, frames it, and finishes the railings and trim himself. On LinkedIn, he describes himself as the company's owner for about nine years, after more than fifteen years total in construction — a background that lines up with the finish-carpentry emphasis in his listed services, which include interior trim, custom millwork, and wood stairs and railings. The written record runs 2021 through 2024 across BBB, BuildZoom, Angi, HomeAdvisor and Thumbtack, and it's mostly strong: Angi and HomeAdvisor both show 4.5 stars from 17 reviews, Thumbtack shows a perfect 5.0 from 7, and BBB has him accredited with an A+ grade. Customers describe him rebuilding decks and porches — extending a deck for a pool, replacing a rotting three-season room, reinforcing a frame a home inspector had missed — and taking on kitchen and bathroom remodels, including a full kitchen and small addition one homeowner called the reason they love their new space. Several reviews single out his follow-through: one customer noted he stayed close to his original estimate even after discovering extra work was needed. One dated complaint stands out: a September 2021 review, at 0.5 stars, said he promised one price and then raised it — he responded on the platform that hidden costs surfaced once the work was opened up. It's the only negative mark in an otherwise consistent record, and it's several years old at this point. A separate 2023 review, four stars, mentioned a deck project running longer than planned because of material delays, though the customer was still pleased with the result. Ask him directly about how he handles cost changes once a job is underway — the one bad review and the delayed-deck review both touch on that, even though most jobs on record land on budget and on time. His licensing is consistent everywhere it's listed: BBB, BuildZoom, Angi, HomeAdvisor and Thumbtack all cite the same construction supervisor license (CS-114329) and home improvement contractor registration (197561), though how long he's been in business is reported differently depending on the platform — 8 to 11 years. For a deck, porch, or carpentry-driven remodel in the Medway area, the reviews point to someone who shows up daily and finishes what he starts; for anything where costs might shift mid-project, get the change-order process in writing up front.

Great job building a new deck , I would hire him again , his price was great 32,000 others wanted triple his price, with everything being so very expensive, Joey kept it within my budget 😀😀
Mcwhinnie Custom Builders was an amazing and professional job he did for my house. A beautiful outdoor deck and roof. When all other companies said it couldn’t be done, Mcwhinnie Custom Builders said the opposite. On time , with price , professional and genuine caring for my home property. I would recommend to anyone to use them. Thanks again M.C.Builders !
Mcwhinnie custom builders came to my home and walked my husband and I through our kitchen and small addition remodel. He did everything we wanted while working with our budget. I love my new kitchen! We highly recommend him and his team.
Joe rebuilt my three season porch. It was on the house when we purchased it, so, it was already existing. Unfortunately for us the home inspector missed the poor Construction of it as well as the fact that it was separating from the house and falling apart. Joe stopped by to create an estimate for me and walked us through the entire process of what needed to happen in order to keep the sun porch and have it be structurally sound. The process did take a bit of time due to permitting Etc but in the end Joe explained exactly what needed to happen, the process that it was going to go through as well as a pretty precise timeline. Overall we are thrilled he did what he said he was going to do and completed it when he said it was going to be completed which is very rare with the limited experience I've had previously with contractors. Good job Joe look forward to seeing you in the fall to build our outdoor kitchen.
Joseph is extremely reliable and hands on when it comes to customer communication as well as satisfactory work. He likes to guarantee the job being done right the first time, and backs it up with the quality wood work he produces on each job site he runs. Joseph has worked in the carpentry field for close to 25 years and his craftsmanship speaks for its self.
