Typical remodeling project around $29,000
Partway through building a deck in 2022, the JWC crew found significant rot in the sill area, told the homeowner about it, and rebuilt that section so it was completely new — picking materials, the reviewer wrote, to stop it happening. That customer named the people who did it: Brett, Jon, Brandon and the guys. JWC is a Topsfield design-build shop, and its own site is mostly about the outdoors: decks, patios, water features, koi ponds, sculptural stonework and treehouses, alongside land clearing, tree removal, additions, remodeling and high-end kitchen and bath tile. Jonathan Wood, who founded it, is described on the About page as "Builder. Engineer. Artist." — a contractor and engineer with a background in architecture and marine systems — and on Angi he writes about learning construction from his father and training at Penland School of Craft and the Rhode Island School of Design. Brandon is listed as VP and operations. BuildZoom's permit record runs to 18 projects, five of them in the past three years, at a typical permit value around $25,500. The written accounts run from 2017 to 2023, and decks carry the recent ones. A January 2022 reviewer took the whole sequence in turn — the initial interview, the estimate, the deck construction, the final inspection — and said the owner, manager and workers were timely and professional at each step; a May 2022 Angi customer put it in one line, that the deck came out great. Further back the jobs are interior and exterior: a June 2017 Angi reviewer's master bath remodel turned out beautiful at a fair price, and a May 2017 reviewer had a bathroom remodeled along with siding replacement and complete exterior painting, crediting Jonathan with design ideas that stayed in line with their budget. The newest written account, from May 2023, came from a customer whose job had not begun — they liked the design ideas and the cost. One thing to settle before you sign: the company's Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #186094, is expired on the state registry. Ask where that stands before any residential work starts. BuildZoom's profile also lists other Massachusetts licence numbers for the business, among them a construction supervisor licence, CS-109875, and a hoisting licence, HE-183178. For a deck, a patio, a stone or water feature — something drawn rather than ordered out of a catalogue — this is a small outfit where two customers led with the design ideas before the build. Sort out the registration, then get the materials and the scope into the contract before the first delivery.
Haven’t begun the job yet. Great design ideas, reasonable cost and pleasant to work with.
These guys are awesome. Brett, Jon, Brandon, and the guys built our amazing deck. In the process, they discovered significant rot damage to the sill area, and communicated this to me, and fixed it such that it was completely new, and used materials that will prevent it from happening again. I was away, and they were able to send photos and explain what had to be done! The results are that we got exactly what we wanted and more. They added a turn to the privacy wall that I hadn’t thought of, which made a big difference in functionality and appearance, and added a bar shelf also. Brett even rerouted the cable to our spa so that it is hidden under the patio bricks. You would never know it’s there. Added at no charge. The workmanship and material quality have no match. Level of detail is amazing. They even grain matched the screw hole plugs. I was asked to provide a detailed punch list, which were very minor details, and these were fixed within a couple of days with perfection. All work was done on time, with great and instant communication. No waiting for days to hear from them. After work was completed, the cleanup was such that you would never know they had been there, except of course the beautiful new deck! I can’t thank JWC for the great experience. Any future work at my home will be done by these guys!
Deck came out great. They did a great job
From scheduling initial interview and discussion of project, onto the estimate, then the deck construction itself through final inspection , owner, manager and workers were timely, professional and a pleasure to deal with . One of few instances where performance not only met, but exceeded, promises snd expectations in every respect. Collaboration and cooperation were quite constructive throughout . Extremely high quality workmanship and imagination. We’ll definitely use them for other projects and would highly recommend them to others.
