K. Powers & Company is a showroom operation, not a truck-and-crew one — wool carpet samples by the thousand, stair runner displays, a Hunter Douglas gallery, all on Charles Street in Needham Heights. The company says it has been doing this since 1992, better than three decades of selling and installing carpets, custom rugs, hardwood and vinyl floors and window treatments, and it names Needham, Wellesley, Newton, Weston, Dover, Brookline, Westwood, Watertown and Boston as the towns it covers. The telling thing is who writes about them. A lot of the reviewers are professionals. An interior decorator writing in June 2024 described years of working together: a commercial carpet installation at a Cape Cod condo that landed inside the client's budget, and a custom handmade rug in an odd size for a living room that took a few months and, in her words, "came out beautiful." A designer at Capello Design wrote in May 2023 that the staff were organized enough to make repeat business easy. People who specify materials for a living going back over and over is a different kind of endorsement than a one-time customer's. Homeowners are in there too. In June 2026 a customer described the designers helping her land on the right stair runner, installing it, and — a small bonus she noted — stocking the wallpaper she had been hunting for. In a March 2023 review, someone who walked in looking for Mirage flooring said the wood floor installation and the workmanship were right, and that the installers left the place neat. Two things to know before you call. The written history is genuine but small: Google shows 5 stars across 15 ratings, and nine written reviews exist in all, spread across 2022 to 2026. And the most detailed praise skews to the trade — decorators and designers buying for clients rather than homeowners running their own project. Neither is a strike against the work. Both mean you are deciding on a thinner base than a busy contractor's hundreds of reviews would give you. They are the right call if you want to choose materials in person, if you need a stair runner or a custom-size rug fabricated rather than pulled off a shelf, or if you are pricing Hunter Douglas shades from an authorized dealer. Before booking, pin down whether installation is quoted separately from the material, and how long custom fabrication runs — the one custom rug described in any detail took a few months.
I’ve known Kathleen, from K.Powers & Company in Needham, MA, for Many years. Over the years while I lived in the Boston area, I appreciated all interactions I experienced with her company — from attending design events at her showroom to having my own line of hand knotted Tibetan rugs “Silk Road Weaves” hosted there. I did discontinue this line a few years ago — but as a lover of this type of work, I naturally turned to Kathleen to help me find the best unique hand knotted rugs for a client here in California, where I’ve been living since 2016. My client was thrilled to know that my long-standing relationship with K.Powers could provide a valuable creative and trustworthy resource for her, even “long distance.” This has worked out very well. Kathleen’s expertise, flexibility in working with me and my client, and her depth of resources were invaluable in making this entire experience proceed very smoothly. I am delighted to share my enthusiasm about this experience with you.
Lovely choice of carpets. The designers really helped me find the perfect stair runner and installed as well. I was delighted that they sold the wallpaper I’ve been searching for! I’m absolutely going back to find a unique area rug.
I am an interior decorator and my partner and I have worked with K. Powers and Co. for many years. The selection of carpets is vast and varied and the people who work there are knowledgeable, low pressure and happy to work at all price points. I recently completed a commercial installation of carpeting at a condo in Cape Cod and everyone is thrilled with the results and we stayed within their budget. For another client we did a custom handmade rug for a living room that needed an unusual size and that came out beautiful as well and only took a few months. Always fun to stop by K Powers to see what new products they have!
Best instillations and quality.
