Ken Howell & Co describes itself on Houzz as a residential remodeling firm based in Acton, Massachusetts, with more than 15 years of experience in residential remodeling, offering multi-level design assistance and thorough project management. In a 2014 review, someone who had worked with Ken Howell & Company on several projects called them large and very detailed, said Ken Howell supplied all subcontractors for the project, and described the company as a one-stop provider. In another 2014 review, the reviewer said the transfer of information from an interior designer's perspective was easy and called Ken and his team accurate, timely and professional. A 2014 review describes a job to replace a front door, construct a portico and replace a brick walkway that the reviewer said should have been done in 2 months but took over 6 months, with some of the work subbed out to other contractors. In that same 2014 account, the reviewer said he never came back to take care of the punch list, and that the front door stain came out very dark, so the reviewer sanded, filled the screw holes and re-stained it.

I see that kitchen and bathroom is Ken's specialization. We hired him for a project to replace a front door, construct a portico and replace the brick walk way. We hired him based on an acquaintance without really checking him out. This is one of many mistakes on our part. He came up with a reasonable contract with a description of work to be done, and a scheduled for payments when certain milestones were achieved. Another one of our mistakes was not specifying a time to completion. For a project that should have been done in 2 months took over 6 months. Although he is not to be blamed for some of the delays since he sub some of the work out to other contractors, he also was not very responsive in getting work that he did completed. At the end we had a punch list before making the last small payment. Since the payment was so small he never came back to take care of the punch list. The quality of his work did not leave a lot to be desired. One of the major problems was the staining of the front door. I’m not sure if he ever stained anything before. First the door should have been sanded and the screw holes that were created to attach the door to the house were never filled in before he stained the door. After applying the stain he did not wipe it down, this is a basic staining process. As a result the finish came out very dark. I had to sand everything down, fill in the screw holes and re-stain it myself. This is not my livelihood but it came out 100 times better. If this type of work is not his specialization he should not have taken this job. He should stick to what he knows best. After this project I would even question that.
