Kevin Cradock Builders does something most Boston builders farm out: it makes its own millwork. Cabinets, furniture and trim are built in the company's own Boston millshop, and the firm invites clients to come by and watch their cabinets take shape. Kevin Cradock grew up in Jamaica Plain and started as a finish carpenter on classic Boston homes before moving into custom cabinetry and setting up his own shop by the mid-1990s. The BBB puts the business start at 2005, lists eight employees and an A+ grade, and records the alternate name Cradock Woodworking. He sits on the boards of ICAA New England, the Boston Preservation Alliance, BRAGB and PRO New England — a heavy concentration of preservation and classical-architecture ties for a builder, and consistent with a shop whose stated focus is bringing old houses back while keeping their historical detail intact. The work splits three ways: high-end renovation of older homes, ground-up custom construction, and the millwork running through both, done alongside architects and designers. What is missing is volume. Five Google ratings and two on Houzz, all at five stars, behind four written reviews — every one of them from 2024. Everyone who wrote was enthusiastic, and there are far too few of them to generalize from. Nothing new has appeared since. If you are renovating a period house in Boston and the cabinetry matters as much as the framing, this is a credible name for a short list. Because the public record is so slight, lean on the portfolio rather than the star rating: ask for addresses of projects finished in the past year, speak to those homeowners, and get scope and allowances written into the contract before work starts.

The quality of KCB's workmanship is without comparison. During a complex project with both structural and design requirements, creative solutions flowed easily. During inevitable moments of challenge, frank conversations allowed us to move forward. Above all, working with the committed, talented, and good-natured KCB crew was a pleasure.
