In July 2018, the Vineyard Gazette reported that a Falmouth company had put in the lone bid — $10.6 million — on a job to strip an airport runway, rebuild its subsurface and repave it. That is the scale Lawrence-Lynch Corp. operates at. It is also the same Gifford Street yard where, a 2023 reviewer wrote, they sold him a few buckets of gravel to patch a pothole, handed over some advice with it, and made a very small purchase feel worth their time. This is heavy civil construction rather than home improvement. The company says Gerald Lynch founded it in Falmouth in 1972 by buying the Frederick Lawrence Company, and that his son Christopher bought the business from him in 2004. BBB dates the company to 1971 and lists 112 employees under Christopher M. Lynch, president; the company's own site puts its workforce above 150 and describes an in-house hot mix asphalt plant and a Martha's Vineyard paving subsidiary. It states that it is prequalified with MassDOT and the Department of Conservation and Recreation, and that it is a union shop signatory to three locals. The public work is documented in the local press. The Provincetown Independent reported in May 2025 that the company won a $7.6 million contract to rebuild Motta Field, signed on April 28 with 412 days to complete, and noted it had built Cannery Wharf Park as well. In November 2021, the Vineyard Gazette reported a $1.65 million award for the Circuit Avenue streetscape, approved by a 3-2 select board vote after debate. Back in 2013, the Portland Press Herald reported a $15 million Cape Wind deal for the upland work of burying the project's electric cables. BuildZoom's permit file adds 25 Massachusetts projects, among them a $1.9 million utility trench for a Falmouth terminal building, a $1.33 million capacitor-bank foundation in Newton and a substation foundation replacement in Cambridge. Two things belong in the open. In 2009, the Cape Cod Times reported that the U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA fined the company more than $69,000 over an April excavation accident in Kingston that left a worker buried up to his chest — that is seventeen years back, and worth raising directly if you are hiring for trench work. More recently, the Plymouth Independent reported in March 2025 that officials from the company and its client told residents at a March 6 meeting that there was no easy alternative route around an upcoming project, and that more delays and inconvenience were likely. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active in the state registry. BuildZoom separately lists two City of Newton contractor licences under one number, both inactive and described as cancelled at some point. For a homeowner, the practical read is narrow: this is who a town hires to rebuild a road, a field or a wharf, and who will sell you material at the Falmouth yard.
