Colin Whyte came to Martha's Vineyard in 1965 as a Brown undergraduate and started hauling trash off residential job sites. Martha's Vineyard Magazine marked the company's fiftieth anniversary in 2021; the firm he built now describes itself as an island luxury builder working from design concept to finish, and on retiring he passed leadership to his daughters, Hilary Moore and Alison Thompson. The work is high-end and mostly new custom homes — Houzz lists 17 project galleries and a typical job cost from $100,000 to $15 million. The reviews there are few and old, all four posted in 2017, and two of them come from trade partners rather than homeowners: a design professional who calls the work right the first time and every time, and a high-end cabinet firm praising the project managers and onsite supervisors. In a 2020 Google review a customer wrote simply that the company does fantastic work with great attention to detail. Project manager Drew Cathey is named warmly in two of the 2017 accounts. The thing to check before signing is the registration. The company's Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #167672, is on the state registry as EXPIRED — it ran to 16 November 2024 and has not been renewed on the record we can see. On the Vineyard much of this firm's work is new construction rather than home improvement, and the two are registered differently, but if your project is a renovation or an addition, ask directly for current HIC registration and insurance before work starts. So: a fifty-year island builder with a small, dated but uniformly strong written record, priced for large custom projects. Ask for recent references — the newest account here is from 2020 — and settle the registration question first.

“When he first came to Martha’s Vineyard in the summer of 1965, Colin Whyte was an undergrad at Brown University with no inkling that he would found Martha’s Vineyard Construction Company, one of the premier builders on Martha’s Vineyard, which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year.”
“Does fantastic work. Great attention to detail. Truly professional.”
“With his two roommates from a camp on Lake Tashmoo, Colin started Martha’s Vineyard Construction with Ross Gannon and Terry Mulcahey.”
Does fantastic work. Great attention to detail. Truly professional.
Best builder we have ever used. Always professional, respectful and diligent. Overall made the whole building experience enjoyable and seamless. Drew in particular was excellent.
MVCC built a beautiful custom home on the south coast of Martha's Vineyard. Drew Cathey was a great project manager and very easy and pleasant to work with. Always professional with a great eye for detail. MVCC was a pleasure to work with!
I am a design professional and have worked with MV Construction on a number of different projects. It's always a pleasure! They are organized, responsive and professional and have top notch project managers on board. But the most important thing, is that the work they do is right the first time and every time. Their attention to detail and commitment to fine craftsmanship is evident from beginning to end. I never have to worry about the work they produce - it's always great!
As a high end cabinet firm, we rely heavily on the quality of the General Contractor's organizational skills, building techniques, and quality of construction to be spot on. Working with MVCC on several high end complex projects on Martha's Vineyard we have been impressed with these qualifications but also with their Project Managers and Onsite Supervisors who are steady, creative, and quick thinkers. This makes the project a success--when everyone works together. We recommend MVCC for any building project. You will not be disappointed.
