Brett Mayo is the business, more or less literally: the BBB file behind Mayo Custom Carpentry & General Contracting lists one employee, and every review on record names him personally. The work customers describe is the kind that wants a carpenter rather than a crew. A homeowner writing in May 2024 described an awkward space above their living room turned into a reading nook with built-in bookshelves and a ladder to climb up to it, and said he understood the idea from the start. In April 2024 another customer had the wall between the kitchen and dining room taken down, then added hardwood floors partway through, and credited him with input on the design and the finish as they went. A third that month had a complete kitchen renovation in an 1860s farmhouse. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active and held in the company's own name. One repeat customer put the trade-off plainly in April 2024: they build their own schedule around his, because he is in demand — and reckoned the wait was worth it. If your project has a date attached to it, raise the calendar in the first conversation. The record is thin and it has aged. All five reviews arrived in April and May 2024 and nothing has been posted since. The company is an LLC formed in 2020; the two decades the website mentions is Brett Mayo's own career working on houses around Melrose and Wakefield, not the company's age. The site also offers bathroom remodels, additions and decks, though the reviews on file do not cover those. The right call for finish carpentry with a design conversation attached — built-ins, stairs, a kitchen reworked inside an old house. Confirm current availability, and ask to see something finished recently.
We had Brett turn this awkward place above our living room into the cutest little reading nook with built-in bookshelves and a little ladder to get up. He was super responsive in his communications and prompt in getting the project done. More impressively, though, he seemed to know exactly what our vision was from the get-go, bringing it to life before our very eyes! I would recommend Brett to anyone, over and over again!
Brett was a pleasure to work with. He has great attention to detail and his work is meticulous.
Brett has done a few job for me now. We literally try to build our schedule around his busy schedule because he is in high demand. But the quality of work, attention to detail and genuine craftsmanship that Brett has and displays is hard to find these days so we are willing to wait. Great work on Amesbury stairs Brett!!
Mayo Custom Carpentry did a complete kitchen reno for our 1860's farmhouse - everything was done exquisitely - highly recommend for any job large or small - Brett is a true professional!
Hired Brett to take down a wall separating our kitchen and dining room. He guided us through the entire process, providing valuable input on design and finish. He was also incredibly accommodating when we added to the project and asked him to bring in hardwood floors. He was quick and responsive with estimates, worked around our availability, and was very attentive to every detail. Would recommend him to anybody.
