Decks, porches and three-season rooms are what people most often describe hiring Joseph McWhinnie for. He runs McWhinnie Custom Builders out of Medway, and the company says he started it in 2016 after more than 25 years in construction — 15-plus of those with Carpenters Union Local 40, plus architectural millwork and custom kitchens on Nantucket. His Massachusetts construction supervisor licence, CS-114329, is active on the state registry in his own name. The Better Business Bureau grades the company A+ and lists it as accredited. In a 2022 review, a homeowner described the custom composite deck he built for their pool, and the variance he took in front of the zoning board twice to get the permit through. A July 2023 reviewer had an old wood deck replaced with composite decking and railings, part of it extended and the frame reinforced, and called the price reasonable and the work professional. A June 2024 Thumbtack customer put his new deck at $32,000 and said other bids came in at triple that. An egress window job from July 2023 went the same way: the customer wrote that Joe pulled the permit and the final inspection passed in ten minutes. Kitchens and additions appear as well — a June 2024 reviewer said he walked them through a kitchen and small addition remodel while staying inside their budget, and another July 2023 customer wrote that he designed the job and laid out his own blueprints. The complaint on file is a half-star Angi review from September 2021: one price promised, then increased. Several other customers between 2021 and 2024 said the opposite about cost, calling his quotes reasonable and price efficient, but the number is still the thing to settle first. The written accounts run from 2021 to mid-2024. Right call for a deck, a screened porch or a three-season room around Medway, especially one that needs a permit or a variance from the town. Get the scope and the final price in writing before anything starts, and ask up front how changes mid-job are priced.
