M.F. Reynolds is a Medford-based general contractor working across the Boston area on the kind of jobs that call for patience with old houses — its own site and Houzz both describe a company tracing back to 1890, though BuildZoom's separate profile puts its founding at 1976, so the two sources don't agree on exactly how long it's been around. Either way, the company handles whole-house remodels, additions, and — repeatedly, per its reviews — historic restorations for clients in and around Boston, Cambridge, Newton, and Brookline. What stands out across its six Houzz reviews, dated 2014 to 2020, is how often clients came back or had worked with the crew years before: a 2020 review notes MFR remembered a property from a job done roughly 17 years earlier, and a 2016 review describes a couple who'd used them across "the past two years" for the exterior, landscaping, and three separate bathroom renovations. A 2017 review of a 140-year-old townhouse renovation praises the coordination with an outside architect and the care taken to protect original wood and plaster — the kind of detail people hire M.F. Reynolds for. Reviewers repeatedly name project manager David Dankens and describe "union trained master carpenters." The one real blemish is a detailed, one-star review from January 2020: a customer describes a major kitchen renovation where the exterior door and a granite countertop were installed incorrectly — the countertop later cracked — and says independent specialists confirmed both faults, but that the owner refused to make it right and blamed the customer instead. It's worth asking about directly, since it's the only account on file of a completed job going wrong. Before hiring, know that every review on file predates 2021 — there's no more recent customer account to check the crew's current performance against. On credentials, BuildZoom shows an active Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor registration (#104201) alongside several older Newton-issued licenses that are now inactive, the normal shape of a history that's moved from city-level registration to a state one. For a homeowner with an older Boston-area property who wants a contractor experienced with historic details rather than a fast remodel, M.F. Reynolds' record points that direction. Get specifics on how they'd handle a countertop or exterior-door install given the 2020 complaint, and confirm current availability before signing anything.

We carried out the project management and design on this property and hired MFR to be the contractor and were thrilled with their professionalism throughout. They had even worked with the previous owners of the property and remembered it well, even having carried out work approximately 17 years before! The entire team were a pleasure to deal with and we look forward to bringing them onboard another project in the near future. I would highly recommend them.
We could not be more disappointed with the work of MF Reynolds. They did a major kitchen renovation for us and while many parts of their work were excellent, they improperly installed the main exterior door to the kitchen and a granite countertop. The countertop has since cracked badly. A stone specialist inspected it for us and determined it was not installed correctly. We had a Pella door specialist determine the same thing with our door. We tried multiple times to have Mr. Dankins repair these faults, but he refused, choosing to blame us instead.
Beyond phenomenal! We did a major renovation of a 140 year old Townhouse. Design input in conjunction with our architect Diane Lim (Lim Design Studio, Inc) was exceptional. The improvements and updating blended perfectly with the existing bones of the house. Incredible care was taken during construction to protect the delicate wood and plaster work that was already in place. The budgeting process, accuracy of cost projections & timeline and employment of superb subcontractors gave us confidence through the project. The result was stunning and exceeded our very high expectations. There aren't enough superlatives that we can use to describe how happy we are. For all of our planned future projects there is only one call we will make, to M.F. Reynolds.
My husband and I have been working with MF Reynolds over the past two years and highly recommend them. MFR started with the exterior of our house and the landscaping, and they have just completed three bathroom renovations and repaired extensive interior damage from last winter. David Dankens and his entire team are extremely professional, knowledgeable, and talented. Steve Sullivan was our project manager, and did an excellent job of keeping everything on track with the various subcontractors and was a pleasure to work with over the last several projects. They have very high standards and no detail is overlooked. We couldn't be happier with the process and the end results!
My husband and I have had the best experience of our home-owning lives in working the David Dankens and his crew(s) at MF Reynolds. David is extremely perceptive, attentive to detail and extraordinarily skilled at seeing the scope of a project and presenting options and strategies for the work that make it easy to prioritize all aspects of a project. We had a number of carpentry, painting and gutter repairs that needed doing and before MF Reynolds we had difficulty in finding skilled professionals to help us accomplish this work to our satisfaction. David Danken's professionalism, enthusiasm and honesty are remarkable. The skilled carpenters and painters he brought to us have been timely, talented, respectful and very very polite and helpful. The care in details and the cleanliness demonstrated by all of the MF Reynolds people has been a real pleasure. I cannot recommend the company highly enough!
