Seven five-star reviews on Houzz, and almost none of them is about a single room — homeowners hired MKB Partners to gut and rebuild whole houses. A 1920s colonial in Newton Centre taken apart over nine months, with an addition for a mudroom and a larger kitchen. A kitchen moved to another room while a 130-year-old fireplace and chimney were uncovered and restored. A full gut remodel in Needham. That is the shape of the work people describe. The company works out of 69 Prescott Street in Newton, and its BBB file names Michael Bernier as principal, gives an April 2010 start, and lists one employee. Its BBB page carries an A+ grade, though the business is not BBB accredited, and BBB files it under Real Estate — the description there is a single-source real estate services company doing general contracting, project management and development. Its written record runs December 2015 to April 2019, all of it on one platform, averaging 5.0 across seven ratings. Two things recur. Estimates and timelines that held: a homeowner writing in 2016 said two renovation projects over five years both finished on time and under budget, and a 2019 reviewer in Brookline said the initial estimate and timeline were spot on. And subcontractors — several customers described crews Bernier had worked with for years, running the job under his own supervision. In a 2017 review, a customer redoing two bathrooms and a kitchen credited him with steering them away from spending they did not need. Two things are worth pinning down before you call. The licence is one: Houzz shows a construction supervisor number, CS-086143, on the profile, but that is Houzz's listing rather than anything confirmed against the state registry, so ask for it and check it yourself. Scale is the other — the BBB file lists a single employee, and the reviews describe subcontractor crews doing the actual building, so who will be on your site day to day is a fair question. For a whole-house renovation, an addition, or work on an older Newton-area home, this is a small owner-run outfit with a consistent set of accounts behind it — accounts that are now seven or more years old. Ask for references from the last year or two, and confirm the licence and insurance directly, before signing anything.
MKB Partners LLC did a WONDERFUL job renovating our home in Brookline, MA. Mike ( the owner) is not only trustworthy, his depth of the contracting world is explicitly apparent. The initial estimate and timeline he gave us was spot on. The subcontractors he used had long standing relationships with him and they executed the job with detail and excellence ( all under Mike's careful supervision). Mike's team went above and beyond during the renovation and final punch list items. There is no question that we would use MKB Partners LLC for future home projects.
We recently completed a major gut remodel of our home in Needham, MA using Mike (MKB) to manage the project. At all times from initial negotiations to final signoff we had a great experience with MKB and would highly recommend them. Mike is knowledgeable, calm and very approachable at all times. We availed of his advise throughout the project and took many of his recommendations on board. He uses good subcontractors to complete the work and ensures that high standards are maintained throughout. End result - we are very happy with how our project turned out and would highly recommend MKB Partners.
Michael was very hands on with the projects at our home. We were getting two bathrooms and kitchen redone, plus creating an extra room (dry wall). He was great at making recommendations in terms of costs and qualities of various products, appliances...etc. so we don't spend unnecessary money. If anything became delayed or early, he would always let us know right away. He was great at communicating and making sure all goes well. Very knowledgeable with everything and trustworthy.
We had a great experience with Mike on our home renovation project. It involved moving our kitchen to another room and uncovering and restoring a 130-year-old fireplace and chimney. It also included a mud room, laundry room and bathroom. Mike and his crew were able to work with an older house like ours and the result has been great - very tasteful and in keeping with the character of the house. Mike has a good attention to detail and design sense that is rare in contractors. We would highly recommend his firm.
Mike Bernier and MKB Partners are fantastic. We have engaged them for two home renovation projects in the past five years and both were great successes, finishing on time and under budget. We get a steady stream of compliments from friends who admire the design and craftsmanship of our renovated kitchen and cedar screen porch. Mike has sound judgment, is pragmatic, communicates clearly, and chooses good subcontractors and colleagues. He has earned our complete trust and enthusiastic recommendation.
